2024 was pretty good.
The year began with me nursing a strained abdominal muscle from 2023, which hampered training but I worked around and thankfully it was about 80% healed by late spring.
June was a busy month. In the first week of the month I did a sprint triathlon. Not my best performance and probably my worst 5k time in a tri run, but I got round.
In mid June the GF and I went to Saxony Switzerland hiking in the Elbe mountains. We through-hiked stages 1 - 5 of the 8 stage Malerweg Trail, the Painter's Way in English.
I was the packhorse carrying 15kg up and down those hills. We were only doing 15 -20 km per day, but for the first few days I was feeling it in my ankles and hamstrings until I got conditioned to the weight.
In the last week of June I did the Bournemouth pier to pier sea swim, from Bournemouth pier to Boscombe pier, about 2.5km.
I really enjoyed this, I'm not a fantastic swimmer but I like it and there's loads of room for improvement.
2025
I'm doing lots of walking this winter, eight miles per day to work and back (total) most days and a big walk to see the in-laws most weekends if it's dry (16.5 miles), then drive back in the car with the GF.
Lots of swimming. I've developed a bad habit of over stretching my left arm when coming up to breathe on my right, and on long swims this aggravates my lower back. So lots of drills and back to basics required to iron this out.
Doing a 3km dock swim in Swansea in May.
In June I'm doing the Looe sea swim, from Looe island back to the mainland. It's only about a mile and a half, it was postponed from last year due to bad weather.
Stages 5 - 8 of the Malerweg in July, to complete the trail and get our certificate
If my walking becomes running I might look at signing up for an Olympic tri as a summer goal, ideally a coastal one with a sea swim, but I'm not pressuring myself to do this at the moment.
Here's to an active and enjoyable 2025!
