Has anybody had a 205 Rallye?

I'm seriously thinking of buying one, and unlike their European counterparts, the British ones are a mere 85BHP, compared to the 100 and odd over the channel.

I was wondering - if anybody has had one, driven one, been in one - are they nippy at all? - The 85BHP British model I mean.

Agreed with Rotty,
Meant to be quite a good laugh, although i'd be tempted to hunt out a 106Rallye instead, even in 1300cc guise.
To be honest, all Rallye's have had a hardlife, all the power's top end which means as time goes on the engines show sign of wear, well kept or not.
I'd really recommend setting aside plenty of dolla towards running costs.

Performance is comparable to pretty much any modern 1200cc supermini, i.e. Clio/Fezza, particulary as a few Horses may have left the stable.
BHP is 75bhp posting 0-60mph in around 10-11secs.

Well yeah, I'm after an S1 rallye and have been for over a year, but I'm yet to find one that I'd buy.

Have a look at www.106rallye.co.uk there are loads on there for sale, some very tidy ones too.

The UK 205 rallye uses the same engine as the 205XS, the euro rallye uses the same TU2j2 engine as the S1 106 rallye - but runs carbs instead of injection.

The 205 Rallye is only 75Bhp. You'd be better off buying a GTi, or even a 106 XSI (100bhp from a 1.4), or even a 106 rallye which is 100bhp from a 1.3.

The only 205 rallye worth getting is the european version which from memory has twin webers as standard.

errr, no. If its using the same engine as the 205 XS its a bit quicker than 1.2 Supermini's!

I had a 205 XS as my first car on 91 J so it had the velour + later style interior not the cloth. 0-60 was sub 9 with a K&N bolt on (inc replacement injector nosle) and Janspeed Zorst. It was pretty/very rapid mainly due to the weight. It was a great car but like all 205s little things keept breaking all over the place so gets costly to maintain. Mine cost 3k for a low mile'er in 1997 and for its time was a decent hotish hatch to have which wasn't a nova SR/GTE or AX GT. Someone at my school had a rallye and it was ok. I thought the XS was better.

If your going for a 106 Rallye as a posibility you may as well get a saxo vtr and strip it tbh. More likely to find a better/newer car and still cheap.

But in answer to your question the 85bhp engine (in the XS/Raylle) is very nippy and tuneable at a low price. You will be hard pressed to find one worth buying though at a sensible price.

I'm a fully paid up member and have been for a year :)

The 205 Rally we get in the UK is an XS with stickers and nice seats. It's alright but don't pay a premium or kid yourself that it's anything like the 205 Rallye they got on the continent - which is quite a special car. :)

There is a bigger engine one which people dont like as much due to its weight :(

Personally I own a base model 205. I'd love the same frame with more beef - i.e. a GTI. Just cant find a Miami blue one for under 500 quid :(

205 rallye (uk) started out as 85 bhp using a tu3 1.4 runnin a carb, usually twin choke solex.
this is exactly the same engine as a s1 xs, gt, gr and a few other 1.4s.
so rallye is just really a trim level. or lack of it, the rallyes are pretty bare inside.
the s2 1.4s use a tu3s which has injectors and a cat, this lowers the bhp to 75.

i my self own a 205 gt s1 on a carb and it a riot to drive. just like a go cart. i run it completly standard and its faster than a standard vtr saxo and a punto sporting. keeps up with a 1.8 16v zetec focus and a 1.8 16v 306. it only cost me £165 of ebay.
heres an xs i found, very similar to mine, the plates are nearly identical.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4604442972&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

that is def a tu3 with a carb.
it will prob go for a bit more as its a xs (3dr) instead of a gt (5 dr).
they are very revy engines due to the gearing so just check it ticks over smooth and doesnt burn oil. also check for oil in the coolant tank, a sign of head gasket problems.

Buy one and go a slightly alternative route from the norm, put a TU2J2 engine in there, not a massivley powerfull engine but an absolute hoot to drive, you really do have to keep them on the boil. it should enhance the general "feel" of the car.

Yeah, my 205 "needed brake fluid" over xmas. It had popped both rear cylinders and spoilt the shoes. The price to fix? £150.

That and the "duction" kit turn me off, but thanks anyway :(

Brake Shoes (Replacement)
Price: £13.99 Including VAT at 17.5%

Brake Wheel Cylinder (each)
Price: £16.45 Including VAT at 17.5%

Oof, £100 labour. That's why I do my own work.

Quite. It was on christmas day, I was 200 miles away from home, no tools, not even a haynes book, I'd not done it before myself and it was brakes - not something for experimenting on.

Had to go to kwikfit  - THANKS AA  - they still took 3 or 4 hours over it.

By contrast 6 months ago I had my front pads changed for £30 all-in - by an independant.

Better forking out £150 under the circumstances than find out the hard way I'd cocked up - amazing to think I was leaking fluid when doing 110 up the M1 the day before. The next day the brakes were like sponges - scary really.
