206 vs 306

The 206 is without question the worst and most unreliable car Peugeot ever made. It is truly shocking. By contrast the 306 is really quite good.

My wife has had a 206 for 11 or 12 years, the only things it had really (bar consumables and regular servicing) is a handbrake cable and a replacement clutch, and she has no mechanical sympathy at all. Last MOT preparation cost ~£1.60 on a set of bulbs, which it does seem to go through

Disconnected isn't a word I'd use to describe the handling either, it's a little lightweight and airy fairy to chuck about but it's far from the worst I've driven either. Never feels like it could be dangerous or imprecise

Neither are brilliant though, IMO

306 without a shadow of a doubt, although the 206 "looks" a little more modern they are utter poo, the body work also crumples if you breath on it and the electrics are shocking

Driven both, owned a 306 Dturbo for a couple of years in the mid 90s.

206 isn't a bad car but had a couple of big black marks against it.
1) The driving position is offset. Pedals to the left, wheel to the right. Gave me back pain within an hour or so of driving it.
2) Visibiity is rubbish compared to the 306.

I'd take the 306 every time, preferably a 1.9XUD.

The last time I drove a 206, the gear stick felt like it was made from a tv aerial, I honestly believed it would snap at any moment. In fact the whole car felt like it was about to buckle at a moments notice.

It was until Peugeot in all their wisdom produced the 307.

Now that thing took unreliability to an all new level. There are online communities dedicated to the hatred of that thing :p

No wonder you can pick up an 05 plate 307 for like £50. :D

Back on subject, go for the 306. Some uber bargains out there for essentially a solid car.

I had one. Bloody awful. Everyone I know who has one the loom has melted. Doors handles break all the time. Indicators like to switch them selfs on when you go round a bend. Horn that would stop working.

I had all the above also the fuel pump went on mine..

avoid 307/205 go for the 306

Sacrilege. :)

In fact there's an idea live with the problems an old car brings and buy a 205 gti cheap to insure now they come under the banners of a classic and infinitely better than a 206 might cost a fair bit more though especially for a good un

The XUD is totally rubbish, you would be far better off with an XUTD.

My old man had a 405 Xud back in the day which was....horrible. Replaced with a GRx4 which was much more interesting (though still a bit oddball). Back when Peugeot could actually make decent cars.

306TDi + screw mod

I agree that the 206 is terrible. My ex has one and driving it always felt like you were not actually a part of the process.

It's amazing how Peugeot did SUCH a bad job of the controls

306 TD. It's an IDI engine! Screw mod of justice ;) I'd imagine stock would make a very nice reliable run around.

Had a 206 GTi for a couple of years. Nothing actually broke and I quite liked it...Mostly because I was 20 and it said "GTi" on the back.

Lesson learned since then.

I drove my sisters 206 as one of the first cars after I passed my test around 8 years ago. It was a 1.9d none turbo, possibly the slowest car I have ever driven but the interior was OK and handling average.

Later on I purchased a PUG 306 which I owned for about 3 years. I think it had every problem under the sun wrong with it. I just ploughed in money and kept on.

Never regretted buying a 306 even look at the nicer shapes now and think they look ok.

But honestly why would you buy a car of such age? I picked up an 03 Astra for pocket money around a year ago was a temporary car I owned for just a few weeks, certainly the same amount any road safe 306 would cost and obviously much newer. Can also get some pretty nice examples of cars for around the 1k mark, my vote would not be on a 306 or 206 unless close to free...
