2080Ti Issues

So I have a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AORUS XTREME and I've been having issues with it recently. For about 2 months it's temperatures have gone up to where even in game menus it's sitting at 80C. Before it was nowhere near this.

It's purchased from elsewhere and they've agreed to RMA it but I'm not sure I want an exact replacement (I've had a few issues with it over the 7 months and I hate the Gigabyte software with a passion) the only other option they have really is the EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA, I had the 980Ti version of this and it was flawless for me so I feel like it'd be a great alternative.

I just wanted peoples opinion on which to go with, the Gigabyte or the EVGA card.

Another overheating gigabyte, I’m very surprised (not really)

I’d take the EVGa
So this is a thing? I couldn't find much online of other people having the same issue so thought it was more of a one off. But yea, it was fine to start with for months then about two months it started going up and it came to a head this last week when it was 80C in the menu for Destiny 2.

Out of the two EVGA definitely. As long as you have a fairly decent sized case due to it being a massive card requiring a fair amount of airflow especially near the side otherwise it can choke a bit from experience.

It's a common issue for the 2080ti Auros Extreme to hit 80c, some people had cards go higher than this - even up to 90c. Same goes for the 2080ti Windforce cards which I've also heard of 80c+

The problem is the cooler itself and/or thermal paste - not the graphics card - if you were to put this graphics card on a loop it would be a beast - but the stock cooler has some serious quality control and/or engineering issues.

If taking it apart isn't going to void your warranty you can try reseating the cooler with new high quality thermal paste and that may very well drop the temps to where they were before.

I had the windforce 2080ti. It was hot and loud. Not sure I'd ever buy a gigabyte card especially when their top end aorus are performing like that on the thermals.

I have the Lian-Li O-11 Dynamic. Currently has 3 fans on top as part of the Kraken, 3 below bringing air in directly to the GFX and 3 at the back taking air out. The Gigabyte was fine in that set up for like 5 months so I think the case/fan set up is fine.

I looked at vertical mounts today, saw some people say it can increase temp if it moves it too close to the side panel but on this case they would all sit it dead centre in the case so with the 3 fans below bringing in air over the card I think it would really help.

The aorus xtreme is a piece of crap it has to be said, a cheaply made, barely adequate cooler that they just slapped led's on in the hope no one would notice the pathetic thermals. it has 3 "fans" yet the centre one may as well not even be a fan, it's more like a fan skeleton and can't possibly shift as much air as the other 2, plus the heatsink itself is lacking in thickness as it is, and in the centre "fan" area it's lacking even more due to the fact it's cut down to accommodate Skeletor fan. A cheap POS with a premium price tag.

Vertical is really the only way to go with that card in that case IF it will fit.

Normal pcie orientation I wouldn’t bother I’ve had an FTW3 in the ROG WGX which is essentially the same as the dynamic and the power cables touch the side door it’s that close with about 10mm between the card and the glass.

Massive temp spikes with the door on vs off especially on one of the memory banks. That was with 3 fans directly below too.

In my opinion if you can’t fit it vertically you’d be better of with a hybrid AIO card.

Nvidia charge so much for the base 2080ti pcb etc they have to skimp or its £1350 for an AIO. This is a £1200 card though amazing right? Zotac Twin fan is another prime example of a card throttling from 1350mhz stock to 1200mhz under load as it hits 88c quickly at 4k.

The Gigabyte Aorus though what to say? The pipes are extremely thin it makes my H100i look like a fatboy loop. I always seemed to see these posts also have people not mentioned air bubbles? They say never to put the loop with pipes coming out the bottom right guys? Also another two gripes here is they will bother to put on RGB but forget the basics and for £1200 you will be asked to put £15 in with the RMA for return postage. Thats right folks Gigabyte ask for return postage cash in the box!!! I have heard of a jack in a box but cash in a box is new to me.

So apparently I have to have a like for like replacement, which is a disappointment to say the least.

If I was to sell the replacement what would people's suggestions be then? Stick with 2080Ti or go for something different? I've seen a lot of people suggesting the 2080 Supers in other threads, is that down to a cost/performance thing where there isn't much drop off in performance but there's quite a difference in price?

I play mainly FPS like Destiny, Division etc. CPU is a 9900K and I play at 1440p.

I have a windforce 2080ti (the non-oc version) in a fractal nano s. 2 fans on the front (on a 240 aio) and 2 exhausts at the back. The fan curve for the card is 40% to 60% unless there is a real temp issue. The card even at 4k is between 70 and 80 at most. Probably doesn't help much, but some gigabyte cards clearly do work reasonably well.

I've decided to definitely move the Gigabyte one on, I just have no confidence in it no matter what they say.

After reading about, including other threads here, I think I'm now between just replacing like for like with the EVGA 2080Ti or stepping down to a 2070 Super (probably EVGA or Asus). It's a big difference in price and not so much of one in quality as far as I can see. I get the impression that if I'm not going to OC then the 2080Ti is maybe a little OTT and the 2070 will handle all the games I want without a problem. Is my thinking correct here?

I'm aware it will mean down the road I'll need to upgrade that little bit sooner but I'm OK with that.
