£20k to spend ...

Whilst for £20k you'd struggle to better 507BHP & the performance that goes with it, the running costs and mid teens MPG would rule it out as "the best car for the money" for the majority of buyers with a £20k budget.

Its also not much use if you have some large dogs to cart about with you for example.

Best performance for the money, possibly, the best car? Hell no! - and thats coming from a BMW fan who'd sell his kidney for an e60 M5!!!

I think you may be looking at the wrong link or have quoted the wrong post, that one's in relation to an SLK55 - even less practical than the M5 but it is a convertible which is one of the things that Basher was looking for.

I bought a brand new 2.0 MX-5 for that kinda money. No regrets. I was looking at RX8s, Z4s, Boxters and S2000s but they're all ridiculous insurance for someone my age. Depends how much you care about what badge is on the front as well I guess.

I got my Boxster S when I was 21 and had no issues with insurance, Z4M's were fine on insurance and the S2000 only a tad more.

997 911 Turbo insurance was only £1800, I have a good post code but I'm not sure I would let insurance dictate what £20k sports car I buy.

I want something that's fun, but also has decent performance. Insurance won't be an issue.

How much driving are you doing between the 160 mile commute? I'm sensing the need or reliability here, otherwise a TVR Tuscan would be my number 1 with a bit of change for breakdowns. In reality you'll end up with a boxster S. The cayman has a roof so doesn't fit your initial criteria. The new Z4 is very nice to look at but in my eyes not as special as your budget could afford (sorry Z4 fans).

TBH the spec you asked for that SLK would fit the bill, I cannot think of anything better after seeing that, it will be lovely for the 160 mile commute as well (cept the fuel bill).

So, I test drive the Z4 30i and Porsche Boxster - both cracking cars, albeit very different. The conclusion I think I've come to is that these are cars that I don't think I'd be able to live with as a sole vehicle.

So, I also tested a 330i and 335i and was rather taken by the latter. The car wasn't the spec I wanted so I'm now desperately on the hunt for a decent 335i for £20k :)

Z4m ;) You can buy mine if you fancy as I think I'm selling up. Hard to find a better car for the money and you'll get a lot of change from £20k to enjoy it (about £5k)!

What about a E93 335i with nav, logic7, lumbar support, Active headlights, active steering, high beam assist, PDC front and back, bluetooth........:)

I bet it doesn't have the new iDrive, does it ;)

sadly it does not but the roof comes down and its putting out 375 BHP :D, I'd rather have a E93 with the old Idrive then a newer E92 with the new IDrive.

I did think about doing a retrofit of the new IDrive but could not be bothered in the end as I will probably not keep the car for long now

What's the price for retro fitting? Can the bluetooth be included within that? Have you had any quotes for supply & install?

GT100 is not worth the cash unless you are going to store it as an investment or REALLY want the run-out Limited model.

You can have exactly the same car for half the price.

Other than "Being newer" the major changes are all cosmetic. Not too bad if you absolutely wanted a brand new off the forecourt S2000 in 2009 but the limited tax applied is not worth it as a 2nd hand purchase. Certainly not at £18k.

Put a bit more towards it and by a newer 57 plate SLK55 AMG thats just had its biggest service it ever likely to have 4yr one. Mint silver 35k miles bluetooth and ipod airscarf etc etc etc..

Guess who's selling one
