i have the netgear RP614 at the moment but i only get 8mb without router i get full 20mb, so guess i need a new router but been ages since i bought one lol now i don't know what to look for, always used netgear so not sure i can get a 8 port wired one or whatever else may be the best with best speeds, ie 2 pcs 2 360's and laptop :)

will be highly pleased with help u guys can give me :)

thanks

Pretty sure that router should handle 20mbit fine. Have you made sure its running the latest firmware?

Check the port speed. It could be that the router isn't auto negotiating with the modem correctly and you're ending up with a WAN port running at 10 instead of 100.
Auto neg is standard nowdays but that doens't mean it always works :)

It should be under the interface status display. But you can usually also tell from the port lights. The codes vary so check the manual. Usually it's amber = 10 green = 100 or single light = 10 two lights = 100 but it does vary.

Yep you need to change the WAN to 100M/Full or Auto. Its stuck on 10Mbit and half duplex - i.e it will only send or receive data, not both at same time.

Just look through all the menus within the router and it should be in there somewhere :)

Yes, everything should be at 100Meg full. In theory it's all supposed to auto negotiate to the fastest possible speed anyway. In reality though this sometimes doesn't work. The LAN looks fine so leave it be. Just force the speed on the modem ethernet port and the router WAN port to 100/full and you should be up and away.

Reading some netgear forums, their staff seem to have missed the 10/100 negotiation issue and generally when asked anything remotely challenging respond "Contact Netgear Techs"... making that forum less than useful.

One thing I did see on there skimming through is the versions vary. the RP614v1 can't do more than 10Mbps. The v3 apperently was released for 20meg connections, however the staff on the forum wouldn't actually commit to saying yes it definitely handles the full 20.
I'd maybe have a peek at the version you have.
There's also one or two posts about bad frimware on the v2s and v3s causing issues with the WAN port. They don't appear to be identical to this one but firmware bugs can have varying manifestations.

thanks very much for checking that out and yeah the version i have is just RP614 with dec 2003 firmware, so there is no setting on this modem to change it too 100mb full,

Not for cheap. Only one's I know of are the Prosafe ones which you're starting to break into business grade prices there. Just use a 4 port one and get the TP-Link 8 port gigabit switch on OcUK.
just plug 1 port into a LAN port on the router and as far as the way things will operate those 7 remaining ports may aswell be inside the router with the other 3.

Small unmanaged switches are so cheap nowdays it's almost always cheaper to use them as the LAN backbone and just hang the router off it for accessing the net than to buy routers with bigger port counts.

ah right guess they dont realise how many ports some homes need nowadays hehe but cheers :)

so if i bought a 8 port netgear switch i would be able to connect it to my existing 4 port router... but i guess it wouldnt fix my net speed!
