20mph zones!

You hit a child doing 20mph, they will get up. cry and more than likely walk away.
you will feel shocked at what has just happened but feel good inside.

when the person over taking you doing over 30mp hits a child. they will not get up.

If we all stuck to the limits there would be no need to post this.

If kids were taught to cross the roads like they used to be there would be no reason for 20mph.;)

I think it depends on the type of road - small roads with cars parked either side where you have to pull in to let others past I tend to drive 20-25 on those anyway.

So I think a 20mph limit on those type of roads is sensible to deter people from roaring down them at 35.

Larger roads with parking bays, clear crossing points and better pedestrian visibility 20mph is a bit pointless.

I moved away from Bristol about 4 years ago, so haven't experienced the recent rise in 20mph zones. I can think of plenty of streets where 20mph limit would be entirely appropriate, though - all those terraced roads with cars parked either side and one lane in the middle, was amazing how many people would actually drive at 30 on them - totally inappropriate.

Wider through-roads do feel especially sluggish at 20, though.

I live on a 20 road which most people enjoy doing 35 down, it really really annoys me. How can you be in that much of a rush. my road is ~ 600 meters which takes 1minute 7 seconds to do at 20mph and 45 seconds at 30. Is it really worth a) endangering peoples lifes and b) breaking the law to save yourself just over 20 seconds when you will no doubt end up behind someone at the next junction and have to wait anyway.

I like doing the speed limits in slow zones to annoy people behind me, is that bad? We have a really long road that basically runs through the whole town and it's a 30, and no one ever does it, I like doing it to wind people up :D

I think you and me will be good friends!

My problem is people that buzz past you over the speed limit and are then stuck in traffic a few seconds later in no better position than they were before they risked overtaking me. I'm by no means a slow driver, I just follow the limits because I'd rather not get my ass handed to me by the rozzers if anything did ever happen.

I usually don't speed around the 20 zones.
Once, driving through a 20 zone near me, a kid ran out behind a car without even looking across my path, and I'm very sure I would have hit her if I was going any faster.

I've followed many [olice and been followed by many police doing 30 in a 20. It's a complete joke. I don't even know what the mayor was thinking. The stupid 20mph zones and residents parking schemes really are annoying.

Think I'm on my 4th or 5th ticket for the year. Hurrah!

20mph zones are extremely frustrating, definitely feel like a tool driving through them with people driving behind. However, there's a couple of the 20mph zones in Birmingham that I have seen camera vans on in the afternoon. I will not be going over 20mph on those stretches any time soon!

Our estate was recently converted to a 20 from a 30. Reason behind it was a fatal accident where two groups of lads used the road as a race track, and going round a sweeping right hander 2 abreast smashed into an oncoming car killing a 17yr old girl and leaving 2 others with life changing injuries.

Speed bumps were installed first which did have an effect of slowing down the traffic from doing 40 in the 30. Has the 20 limit done anything? Nope. People still do 30+ as the road is a rat run for a local industrial estate and also a shortcut getting into Leeds from the motorway. Pretty much all the residents do 20-25, but I've been overtaken quite a few times by folk I don't recognise, getting the finger as they speed past. (They don't seem very talkative when you catch them up at the bottleneck roundabout at the Enid of the road and knock on their window for a chat though!).

Only thing I've ever seen slow people down properly is when the police set up with their speed guns, but that's about twice a year.

My road is a 20 with no speed humps but its a fairly busy road with a park opposite and there is a local school further down past the roundabout. I can see why they have done and I try and stick to 20 as best I can but others just speed up and down the road completely ignoring it. Especially when the local youf hire out the cars for weddings, it turns into a drag strip!

Think it depends on the time of day as well. If its midday on Saturday I'm much more likely to obey the 20mph speed limit. If it's 11pm onwards then chances are I'll probably be driving 40 in a 20.

Fair enough, also in bristol atm they have introduced pay to park much further out of the centre, so now there really is nowhere realistic to park if I drive in and walk 40 mins to work everyday

It's this logic from those who set the limits that annoys me the most, its tragic that people have died - but if they think a speed limit reduction would have stopped the racing idiots, then they are barking up the wrong tree.

Last year in Reading two cyclists were tragically killed by a drunk, high driver who held no licence who threw a tantrum and sped off after an argument - the community response ? WE MUST LOWER THE SPEED LIMIT. I would like to know who honestly believes that this individual gave two hoots what the sign said at the time, as he was already doing nearly double the posted

It's local politics. Awfull car accidents do happen, lowering the speed limit is a no brainer for a councilor.

20mph zones don't bother me as much as the massive road bumps we have around here that I have to drive over under 10mph anyway. People don't seem to pay attention to them though, and whilst they can get angry with me for doing around 20, none of them seem to want to overtake, so I guess they know they shouldn't be going too fast.
