21:9 aspect ratio coming

For the love of all that's holy, make something above 1080. It's simply unacceptable to limit computing to that vertical resolution just because of movies.

I fully agree, 1920 x 1200 is far superior as a screen over the equivalent 1080 even with movies

Having heard about this monitor a few days ago I've been reading up on it and drawing some conclusions.

1: Its not that big, you can't judge size form the images and 29" sounds huge but because that 29" is at more of an angle than on a 16:9 screen it means the height of this panel is the same as the 23" LG IPS235 I'm using right now (well ok, its 0.1 inches bigger). Basically this will be the same size as a 23" LG monitor just 33.33% wider, so quite wide but overall smaller than a 27" 16:9 screen.

2: It may not cost the earth, this ones more of an assumption as there's no fact behind it but remember this is basically a 133% width version of the monitors LG sell for £120, I can't see it competing on price with 27" monitors despite its uniqueness.

3: A 20:9 screen with a 2560x1080 resolution is going to be like having dual 4:3 screens with 1280x1024 resolutions, this is a big cool factor for me as I once had a pair of screens just like that, obviously 1080 is slightly taller than 1024 but that's hardly a bad thing, I like the Windows 7/8 ability to make a window take up half the screen and with this monitor I can use that feature to use the screen as two workspaces when needed and also to be one big screen with no bar down the middle when needed.

Looking forward :)

Depends what you want to do with it really, bare in mind 1366×768 only surpassed 1024×768 to be the most common resolution in April this year so for a lot of people who would like more space but don't want two screens or a massive 27" 1440p monitor this is excellent. I fall into both category's lol as I hate having multiple screens and didn't get on with the 27" iMac screen.

I saw a video of this monitor last night demonstrating its ability to dead with multiple inputs, you can actually do screen in screen with on input appearing in the top right hand corner over the main screen and you can scale the image, not just that you can split the screen between two inputs.

This is looking really good for me now as I would be able to have my windows system running with whatever work was processing and MSN on screen yet also have a games console input overlaid and the ability to remove it or work around it when needed, I have actually considered buying a HD video input card before now to do this but their expensive and use system resources. This monitor gets better every time I hear something new about it lol.

Wouldn't put it pass Samsung to come out with one, ideally a 120hz version in the coming months.

I can't see the first outing for a non-TN 120hz being something that will cost £1000 - It's almost a requirement to stiff the consumer by charging double for 120hz.

If its a possibility then I'm very interested, gives me reason not to faff about with eyefinity but retain a wider than normal view - having said that if the 120hz sets do come in at around £1k then I'll leave off for now, looking to budget around £6-700 as a max for a 120hz 21:9 unit.

I didn't want to ditch 120hz (love how smooth it is) for 1440/1600p so the chance of something like this almost gives me the best of both worlds (i hope)

Having had eyefinity i found it a bit too wide but now i have a 120hz i sort of miss the exta witdh in games so one of these monitors could be perfect for me

Seems to be some misinformation about on the 21:9 philips screen. Some places mention it being passive 3D capable, but on other places it seems the "Philips GIOCO" is the 27" passive 3D screen.

And I have seen some say that the "Philips GIOCO" is 2560x1440p. I would love an ultra wide passive 3D screen (though I do wish they were more like 33" plus), but if the Gioco is 2560x1440p, then I could happily go with that as a single screen solution.

Too little reliable information...

There is a 21:9 monitor in the works from Philips, but it's not the Gioco. Gioco is the one with the AmbiGlow. The confusion might be stemming from the fact that one site (don't remember which one, anymore) didn't read the press release careful enough, and practically bundled all the good features into one monitor, when in fact there were 5 separate monitors, with very different features.

Also, it hasn't been officially stated if the Gioco is in fact passive (at least I didn't notice it?). They only stated "flicker-free"/"zero-flicker", so people are assuming it's passive. Although, there's nothing else it could reasonably point to, but it is still quite odd they didn't outright tell it. Furthermore, they have stated the panel type for every other monitor in the news-bit, but the Gioco is the only one they left unmentioned. Which is quite worrying too, because the most obvious reason for this would be TN panel... But I think I remember seeing a video from IFA, panning the view from multiple angles, and it didn't seem like TN, but it might be that someone thought it was the Gioco, when in fact it was something else. So until they officially state otherwise, I will assume the worst (TN).

edit: Oh wait, it seems they have updated the UK website to include the Gioco...

Well, the bezel is thicker than the original photos suggested, which was to be expected, given the previous happenings with other manufacturers. But it also seems to be AH-IPS (yay!), with 1920x1080. And the model number is slightly different from what TFTCentral initially visaged.

It seems they are flagging it to be a Brilliance line, which is surely good news. But remains to be seen what the price will be, Brilliance line is usually not the cheapest of the bunch.

...Wait, I don't see any mention of the 3D anymore !?!

edit2:
I hope they have two AmbiGlow monitors planned, as the removal of 3D is quite drastic, given the original information. It would also explain the changed model number.

Monitors seem to be the most consistently annoying aspect of computer buying as far as I am concerned...

They just never seem to get things quite right (monitor manufacturers that is), it's usually difficult to get solid info/specs, etc, etc.

I hate buying new screens...

Tried surround sound gaming - great but takes up too much room, FPS takes a real hit even with two 680s and worst of all a fair few games simply don't support it at all so I looked elsewhere and came across the LG EA93 monitor; now this could be the answer for me but does anybody have any real information about when we're likely to be able to purchase such a monitor? I've looked in all the usual places and there's mention of November but nothing real concrete...

Surround sound? Very nice to have. ;). I assume you meant Nvidia surround. :). I'm not a fan of it either.
