Worked out going round milton keynes (rounderbout central) in the vectra results in 21mpg where as spanking up the motorways at 90-100 indicated and going around north wales eneded up with 34mpg!!!

How the hell can i improve my mpg around town apart from getting a new car?

(Also its an 1.8 auto :()

Such as?

Upto £15k if newish (ie credit at second hand/year old type places)

Virtually anything, with a budget that big the world is your oyster.

Although how much do you ACTUALLY have, becuase financing a car 100% is daft.

And if you've got the cash to spend £15,000 on a car why are you that bothered about 21mpg around town? I doubt its really costing you all that much money.

Well got half or so and we need a new car anyway or even two.. as this one the gear box is a bit dodgy and i'm getting a new job hopefully which will be a comute of 60m a day or so..

Wife wants some sort of auto, big as have a set of twins

Me wants a motorbike..

about £3k will get me what i want so do i get a new mondeo/cmax type or an older (3yrs) galaxy as they are still £17 at a year or so.

What sort of mpg do you expect? I'd say that was about right for that car. I seem to remember reading on the VxON forums, someone's manual Vectra SRi diesel only gave him about 20mpg in town too (how a diesel can be an SRi escapes me, but still).

If I do heavy town driving, lots of traffic then my 2.0 Mondeo is not much better at around 25MPG.

That's terrible. You should be getting around 30mpg around town in that car. When did it last have a service? Changing the fuel filter should help things. Maybe you should get it looked at, definately sounds like its not running right.

I drive a vectra 2.5 v6 gsi and i average out 25mpg in town and 35mpg on motorway. Before that i had another vectra which was a 1.8 and that was obviously a lot better on fuel although i don't know exactly what it was consuming as it didn't have the trip computer. I would have thought an auto be better on fuel but i've never driven an auto vectra.

Improve your driving.

Use the accelerator and brakes as little as possible, e.g. don't pull off quickly and when approaching roundabouts slow down gradually and plan when you are going to join rather than braking late and ending up stopping because there isn't a gap.

I got pulled over by the Police a year or so ago because they thought my brake lights were out. Infact I was just looking and planning ahead and adjusting my speed so that I never needed to use the brakes. It takes a lot more effort and concentration to drive in this manner but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new car.

I drive like this a lot and it makes boring, slow town driving far more interesting.

I think my relatively low MPG is because Bristol traffic is just SO slow during peak periods. I think it averages 4Mph and is the slowest in the entire country.

I probably get nearer 30Mpg when the traffic is not at it's peak.

LOL! I thought i was the only one who has had that happen to them!

Its important in my BM to be smooth, as i get 27mpg on the motorway, and with much lower around town. I have the traffic lights on my way to and from work sorted, i can usually get the whole way without having to stop (traffic permitting!)

I bet that isn't what you get inching along in 1st for miles.

I spend around an hour in traffic every morning creeping along very slowly. I can get it moving along nicely without going above 1000 revs. Must be the weight of the flywheel helping me along. Probably isn't doing much good for the clutch though. I have had over 25mpg when i've been extremely skint, but usually its on around 22/23mpg with combined economical driving around town and foot down when the opportunity is right. I have had upto almost 40mpg on the motorway when following Jeremy Clarkson's tips!

Gotta love that v6! It might only be a vectra, but its the flagship model and does catch a lot of people by suprise. I've got KONI suspension on mine, bigger discs (drilled and grooved), greenstuff pads. it's lowered 35mm and riding on 19's. It has a various engine mods too. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but i enjoy it very much so don't knock it yo!
