I live about 6km from my exchange, and BT have set a target date of Q3 2011 for the switch to 21CN. I get a pretty ****** service and have just been wondering about this whole 21CN thing.

How does this whole 21CN work. Would the 6KM+ of copper running to my town be replaced with Fibre Optic, then distrabuted to the homes using the existing copper, or is just the backbone to the exchanges replaced coverted to Fibre Optic in which case doesnt help me?

Cheers
Wes

Watch your language.

As far as i understand it, they hope to get fiber to the kerb (instead of to the home) which would allow much higher rate DSL technologies (like XDSL 50Mb down 20Mb up) to run over the last Half a KM (upto a KM) or so of copper to your house.

At least that's how it stood last time i read their press released plans, I tend to ignore their news nowadays as i know it will just be more delays, or marketing trying to make us see that phorm is good lmao.

Well thats some good news then.... just too bad its so long, guess the little nips like me in small towns have to wait till last... :)

But on the bright side, smaller towns have lots of good pubs.. so there is plenty to do to pass the time ;P

With 21CN, none of the above is going to happen. Nothing will change between you and the exchange and any FTTC plan is a long way off yet.

Some of the first companies to utilise 24mbs will be entanet and its resellers like adsl24, titanadsl, ukfsn, aquiss. from the 1st may i belive.
