Hi,

Work gave me a new 22" screen today. After using for a whole day I'm pretty impressed at the extra space I have on screen when compared to my old 19" widescreen, so am planning to buy from for use at home - monitor feels so small now :(

Bear with me, I have a few questions :)

I'll be using for a most web/photoshop work and general computert use. Will have a bit of light gaming in the form of the awsome quakelive.com :)
I'll get a fair bit of use, so want a decent quality monitor.

Now, the one at work has a resolutions of 1680x1050, but a lot of OCuKs range have a full HD resolution - not sure how this would seem on a 22" monitor.

Also, I only have a GeoForce 8600 GT GFX card - but could slightly upgrade that for the right monitor if need be.

Have been having a look a the OCuK 22" range and have come up with the following as a short list - what are you opinions? Space isn't an issue now, as I had a brand spanking new room with a huge desk ;)

Samsung SM2233BW 22" - saw one of these in the flesh a while ago and loved how they looked. Has a very high contrast ratio too.

Samsung P2270 - Can't see how this differs from the P2250 but absolutely love how that looks. Am a little worried that thwe resolution is too high for a 22" screen.

Iiyama ProLite PLE2209HDS-B - amk including this as my mate at work owns one and reckons its the best upgrade he's ever made. Owned a Iiyama CRT a few years and was very impressed.

specs on monitors don't say much about the monitor itself... the Dell 2407WFP for example, only has 1000:1 contrast ratio, yet it is still regarded as one of the best 24'' monitors...

I have the Dell 2209WA at work. It is nice monitor, hard to tell with regards to its gaming/ multimedia side as I haven't used it for that. Seems to have good colour repoduction.

+1 for the 2209WA. I had mine alongside my 2408wfp, and it compared very favourably. A lovely monitor, I'm so happy I didn't get one of those FullHD TN screens. What's the point of having 1200p if the panel's image quality is not up to scratch and you can only see it from straight on.

Edit: Please note that the advertised contrast ratio is NOT the image contrast ratio of the panel, it is the dynamic contrast ratio(the backlight is varied to gain advantage in contrast tests). Pretty much all TN panels, including the ones you list above will have image contrast ratios of 1000:1 or less. The dell 2209wa also has 1000:1 if you want to compare it on those terms. However, as is mentioned above, contrast ratios do not tell you which monitor is good. For that, you need to search out some in depth reviews which compare ghosting, image quality, colour calibration, viewing angles and many more; it is very hard to compare monitors just based on advertised specs.

I'd go with the Dell. I recently got a iiyama e2208hds in work which is 1920x1080 and it's a little hard on the eyes. Lots of people here have them and they've got the res lowered so they don't get eye strain; I'm just not into running monitors at none native res :P

Go with the Dell, the res is better on the eyes and the image quality will be great. I have a 24" H-IPS screen at home and the image is far better on that than this one at work.

had this one for a while now and not got no issues with it,

i use is for web design and gaming, 10 out of 10

LG W2252TQ (DVI version)

i paid £220 when i got it but you can pick it up for around £150 now as i am looking into getting a second one for my setup

One of my mates has them, they do look lovely, but I'd still recommend the Dell anytime over any other 22'' out there atm ;) you can't go wrong with it.

I'm tempted to get the Dell 22" but I'm upgrading from a 19" Viewsonic VX922.

Is the price & size difference between 22" and 24" worth going for the 24"?

Decisions Decisions :(

you only really need to go to 24" if you will be using the resolution supported, otherwise you may aswell save some mony and go with the 22",

LG all the way :) lol

Have you considered the BenQ E2200HDA series, there's a review of it in this months PCGamer seems a good buy for a small price.

1920x1080 resolution too.

edit: just noticed you only have a 8600 res maybe a little too high

I think, if you want full 1080p resolution then go for a 24". Though, the price difference from a 22" is quite high, imo, for a decent model. You'll also struggle to find one that doesn't seem to suffer from some sort of issue.

Otherwise, go for a 22". I would love to go 24 but 1) i cant afford it and 2) I can't find one that doesn't leave me thinking "will I get a lemon or not?"

Would I honestly need to upgrade as the nvidia site says it supports up to 2560x1600.

It will supply that fine for TV + general work, gaming wise the card will definately struggle to provide decent settings at playable frame rates, if all you play is quakelive then you should be fine, but anything above that and the 8600 might show it's lack of power. :)
