Hey guys,

I have recently posted on another thread about what make and size should I decided to get, building a new system, blah blah... but what I didn't think about is the graphics card and what the quality of the picture will be like if I decided to go with a 24".

I'm a heavy gamer and love to watch films on the computer, but mainly gaming... I would like to run my xbox 360 on it and get HD quality.

With the 24", my friends feels I would need a good graphics card, either the 9800GTX/GX2, even tho most people of OC forum say 8800GTX. Apparently, when you have a 24", you need to make sure your able to run 24" at max res (1920x1200) or the quality will be poor and lower res will be fussy and this will be annoying. If games struggle with that res (i.e. Crysis), I would need to lower the res/quality and still the game will look poor.

My friends recommend 22" and told me to forget running the xbox and buy a new LCD TV with HD, so I won't experience major fussiness like I would with 24" at low res and it will still be big enough for running films on my computer.

Now, I would like to have other people reviews on this situation. If you had a 22" and switched to 24", have you experienced problems at low res for certain games with the 24"? What is the quality like? If you had to choose a 22", what would you suggest?

I'm looking at around £400, maybe £500.

I was looking at the BenQ FP241W 24" and 1 of the Dell Ultrasharp 2407/08WFP-HC 24". I heard a 22" Samsung are good.

The 8800GTX is fine, I use it slightly overclocked and the only game it has any issues with at all is Crysis and that still mangages 1920x1200 at max graphics settings pretty well really.

I've used my 24" at 1680x1050 as well and it's fine. Maybe not quite as crisp as at its native resolution but it's not really all that noticable to me.

And to be honest with the price of the XFX 8800 GTX at the moment you are in a win win situation anyway.

Crysis looks fine @ 1440 x 900 on my 24", it looked fine on my 22" aswell. Infact i spent a lot of time switching between various native and non-native widescreen resolutions, and can safely say you really shouldn't worry about it. Once you're immersed in the game i doubt you'll notice a blind bit of difference. I run an 8800GT and it plays every game i own (Bar crysis) at 1920 x 1200 anyway.

I was thinking, I could get the 24" monitor and get a 8800GTX or I could get a 22" Samsung, with 2x 8800GTX so I'll go SLI, what you think?

24" and a 8800GTX without a shadow of a doubt. That's still 1920 x 1200 gaming goodness with AA, and one mahoosive screen, and it doesn't limit your motherboard choice (probabaly more importantly)

basically the only game that it would struggle would be crysis...

So its between the BenQ and Dell now, if you had to pick Dell 07/08? and from BenQ 24" or the dell you picked?

you can run any game in any resolution 1:1 pixel mapped on a pc - just go into the driver and disable scaling. on a 24" monitor 1680*1050 still uses 21.5" on the screen with a black border.

I run my 24" at 1920 x 1200 in all my games and don't have any problems and I'm using an 8800 GTS G92.

benqfp241w, i run one of theese with an 8800gts 512mb, absolutely great monitor, an 8800gtx would be a better option graphics card wise with a screen this size, but when it comes to gaming (mainly cod4 in my case) i keep the full resolution and do without aa/af, at that res i personally dont notice lack of aa/af etc, some others may, but ive found it to be a good combo.

Is it me or does after going 24" make you want more resolution? the need for MORE RES!!!

ive recently started looking at 27-30 inch monitors, ive only had the 24 for a few months, gotta stop myself and try and be happy with what ive got:D

Well I won't be going 30" until a gfx card is out that can run crysis at that res ABOVE 30fps!

Isn't the 2008WFP S-IPS ?

personally i dont even rate crysis as a good game, yes it looks nice but needs to much hardware to run it at a decent rate, whereas cod 4 is a game that is more scaleable on various systems which gives more people access to the game, i think games like crysis (because its so demanding) tends to put people of pc gaming.

Just to reconfirm what others have said, go 24".

I recently upgraded from a 22" to a 24". I had already accepted that I was going to have to change my machine to run games at 1920x1200 but with the exception of Crysis everything runs great on a e6400 Core2Duo @ 2.8Ghz and a 8800GTS 640mb, so I haven't had to upgrade anything at all. Also if you are concerned with the interpolation that your monitor might manage go for a screen which supports 1:1 pixel mapping. Though as indicated you'll most probably stick to viewing things full screen at lower resolutions.

CoD4 @ 1920x1200 4xAA max quality = 65fps
Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 @ 1920x1200 8xAA max quality = 40fps
Assassins Creed @ 1920x1200 DX10 max quality = 35fps

Crysis DX10 @ 1920x1200 very high quality with 8xAA = 3.7fps :p
