Right I dont know whan one to go for, of course I would like a 24" but I dont have the money to keep upgrading the graphics card to run at its native res. So how do they look running games at 1680x1050 or even slightly lower at 1440x900?

Or do I just go for a good quality 22"? At the moment I have a 20.1" lcd, its not great but i needed something cheap at the time cos my 19" was on its way out. At the moment Im running most of my games in 1440x900, cos the native res of 1680x1050 is slightly jerky in games.

So what you think guys? Also in hight wise how meny inches would I be gaining going fron a 20.1" to a 22"/24"

If you're finding 1440x900 a stretch then I would go with a 22" and enjoy better framerates while still having a nice screen. However if you're planning to upgrade to some of the new ATIs coming or a new graphics card then personally I would go with a 24" just because you then make a leap to 1900x1200 which also offers more desktop real-estate when doing things other than gaming.

I agree with bobly

What he says makes sense

I've gone 24" and waiting for a new card (maybe ati)

I was thinking of 19" to a 22" but really am glad i went for a 24"

Well my 19" was 37.5 cm x 30cm

New 24" is 52cm x 32.5cm

Hellofa difference !!

I use metric as it's more exact to show actual panel dimensions that you see

So those dimensions are the viewable panel

May help you somewhat

Why go half the way, either save you money until you can upgrade both or get a 24" and run games at a lower res until you can afford a gfx upgrade.

:)

I always thought VA panels on 24 were terrible for fast paced games. Don't they have significantly higher responses time compared with the normal 22 TN panels?

The OcUK 24" *VA panel is meant to be good for gaming (especially if you manage to get the MVA panel). You can get fast 24" TN panels as well. Stear clear of the Samsung 245T or the Dell 2408WPF as these have stupidly high lag.

As above, if you have the kit to support the 24 when playing games then go for it. I just upgraded from a 19 to a 22 and the 22 is bloody huge in comparison.

24. always. a 24" panel @ 1680x1050 would look very nearly as good as a 22" panel at the same(its native) res. plus of course it'll be a fair bit sharper on the desktop when yo run at 1920x1200 and you'll have >30% more desktop space. its a no brainer!

mine is very very good. virtually no input lag at all.

24" for sure. The extra screen size and higher resolution make a big difference. I upgraded from 22" to 24" a few weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised how much nicer a 24" screen is to use. Not sure about 1440x900, but most 24s will scale 1680x1050 very well indeed.

Like you I'm running a 3870 and find 1920x1200 is a bit much for it in fast games. Saving my pennies now for one of the new 4800 series cards, they look well tasty.

K thanks. Just double checking :D

I've been reading threads on the monitor section for about 2 months now and I still haven't decided whether to buy a 22 or 24. I know the advantages of a 24 VA with the added desktop space and viewing angles but input lag on the majority sounds poor. The OcUK model does sound a lot better on the whole when it comes to gaming. I'm still not sure I want to go with the panel lottery & the other issues that have arisen recently though

if you get a va panel which the vast majority are, you'll have no problems with input lag at all. The s-ips panls arent terrible either, but the va panels are amongst the best times we've seen from any lcd.

apart from desk space and viewing angles, you get far better colours form VA and even more so with ips panels than the TN panels you get in 22" screens. there ARE some VA 22" screens around, but they are uncommon and generally very expensive. There's really no reason to choose a 22" when the 24" dgm is so cheap. its not the best built screen, and lacks the amount of inputs a 24" dell would have, but the panel is 1st class and made my 22" dell look very very poor:)

Amen to this.

And games run at below native res don't look bad as long as there's a good number of pixels to start with.

i.e 1680 or 1440 on a 24" is going to be fine, start going to 1280 and you might start needing to sit a bit further back and let your eyes do some natural blurring ;)

I've always thought running at a non-native res looked pretty poor. At least running 1024x768 looks blurred on my 19" (1280x1024). I maintain aspect ratios so that wasn't the issue. It was just that it wasn't 1:1 that seemed to be the problem.

I might be tempted by 24" if lower res looks ok. I'm pretty fed up of waiting for decent 22" va screens :(

I bought the OcUK/DGM monitor earlier in the week and seeing as I only have a 8800GTS 320MB the first game I tried was Race Driver: GRID at 1650 res, and it ran nice:D (not tried it at native res yet).

I moved from a 19" Viewsonic VP930 (also a P-MVA panel) and am loving the extra desktop space and higher res gaming.

I have the AU-M240UW01-V0 panel which is the same P-MVA panel used in the BenQ FP241W. It’s a quality panel and would recommend it.

Also current stock seems to be the AU-M240UW01-V0 as a number of ppl have got this panel over the past few weeks. (Don't quote me on that though:p)

I'm gonna have to upgrade my PC (both graphics, ram and processor) if i want to game on a 22/24 so in total it would be around 500-600 pounds. If only LCD's were great for games when it came to all resolutions my 7900GS and 3800+ would be fine!
