The road to erudition
As title. :p

I currently have a Viewsonic VP201 which has been a brilliant monitor, it was one of the champions of it's day. I got mine nearly new for a then bargain price of about £500, I think they were £800 or so when new about 5 years ago. Which is a lot of money but I think paying for the best (within limits) guarantees a lot longer shelf life out of a monitor (or any product for that matter). Who else has been happy for 5 years with a piece of hardware?!?

It was up there with the best at the time and it's abilities still hold up to the most recent models with 20.1" size, 1600 x 1200, 0.255 mm, 250 cd/m2, 350:1, 24-bit (16.7 million colors) and a modest 16 ms response. It has had it's day now for me as I'm doing increasing amounts of graphical work so I need something with more size and resolution.

The prices for 24" monitors seem to be a no brainer, but in an ideal world I'd break the bank and go for a 30". Are the top 24" models better at gaming than the 30"ers? Realistically I can't *quite* justify spending a wad for a 30" unless it was head and shoulders above; and not result in me having to sell a kidney to get it. Anyone care to tempt me? :D

Mostly I'm looking for information, opinions and experiences from other forum members who have similar demands and have splashed out.

:)

On another note: At the time going from a 20" CRT to a 20" TFT I did notice a slight response delay (my aim suffered for it ;)), but the sharpness and space saving made up for it. Would I be right in saying LCDs still aren't a match for CRTs even now, talking colour depth/contrast and responsiveness?

The best image quality is usually seen in the NEC LCD2090UXi types. (S-IPS). Usually tricky to source in Europe.

Alternatively the HP LP2475W (H-IPS) is probably the best match for you.
With the Dell 2408WFP (PVA) coming in second.

1+ for the HP LP2475W it's a very good monitor but the Dell 2408WFP is only slightly behind. I have the LP2475W but if I was was getting the dell i would wait for the rev A02 model to come out which is slowing showing up around the net..

Bumpety BUMP BUMP BUMP

Well I think my monitor has finally bitten the dust and forced my hand, anyone care to make some more up to date suggestions?

I like the idea of a 120Hz panel, but it doesn't look like there are any IPS versions?

24" - u2410 - 450
27" u2711 - 900

no 120hz ips yet

only led ips so far is apple cinema display 24" led which can be had for £500 which is good as long as you don't mind gloss and have a displayport out

I might be selling my HP LP2475w soon, it really is an outstanding monitor but i am planning to go to the new Dell 30 inch released soon due to my desk being very large plus my pc will have crossfire 5870 eventually so may aswell make full use of it.(no issues at all with the HP, really great image and brilliant for gaming.)

There were 2 brand new Dell 3008 monitors in the auctions the other day, still in warranty from Dell in unopened boxes.
