I'm still trying to decide whether to go with 22" or 24", I'm thinking 24" could be too large as I sit quite near my screen but then again its only a couple of extra inches.

But anyway, onto the question. I don't really want to keep having to upgrade my hardware to be able to game at 1920 x 1200 so want to be able to play at lower resolutions. I've seen people say on here quite a few times that the 24" screens are fine at lower resolutions but I just wondered how fine they are as I've always understood that TFTs look best at native res. So when people say they are fine should I expect a 24" to look as good as a 22" does at 1680x1050 or is there some noticeable loss of quality, and are some screens better at doing this than others, are there any that are particularly good?

I have played GRID at 1680x1050 on my OcUK 24" panel and it looked pretty good. But as I haven't actually owned a 22" I cannot really compare the two.

Scaling to a non divisable aspect ratio will always cause artifacts. Its mostly noticeable on small text. Some games will look fine, but others its obvious when your in a non native resolution.

A 22inch will look better. Of course, you can set the screen at 1:1, so instead of scaling you will get an approximatly 22inch picture with black borders. In that scenario the 24inch panel will display an approximatly 22inch picture at full quality, with no artifacts.

Personally I always game at full native res 1920x1200.
