Hi guys. i currently have an nvidia 8800 gts 320mb and an asus 19" Wide screen monitor.
Id like to upgrade to a larger monitor (22-24") but am concerned im going to be pushing my (well over clocked) GPU to far with a bigger monitor.
I can currently run most games at full res (1400x900) with everything on hi (older games get AA and AF too) but would like a bigger panel.
If i went for a bigger monitor, would i need a GPU upgrade to?
Im guessing something like the new x2 from ATI would be the way to go

Opinions and comments greatly appreciated

:)

The HD3870X2 is one option, the 8800GTX is another, and then there is the 8800GT/GTS 512mb.

It all depends on the resolution you play at, but if it was me, I'd go for an X2(the cheapest you can find), or the POV 8800GTS 512mb at £165.

Id like to stay with top settings and max res, so would the gts 512 be capapble of that at 24" resolutions??

It all depends on what games you play. If £250 is your max budget the X2 is THE best your single PCIe slot solution your gonna get. You might also want to consider the 8800GTX as it is still a heavyweight.

If you don't use too much AA/AF at 1920x1200 (24inch) rez, you should be ok with a 8800GTS 512mb in everything except crysis (which no card can handle well at that rez).

According to that review, the 8800GTS 512mb gets 85fps (max??) in CoD4 with max settings and 4xAA enabled. Not bad :).

Crysis....... been there done that. might come back to it in a year and play again, but i did it at delta level, so im in no rush.
I mainly play driving games and TF2 but do have the odd session (4-5 hours:rolleyes::eek:) on COD4, Assasins creed, supreme commander etc.

also looking forward to flashpoint 2 and farcry 2, so want something with half decent power to cope.
would the gts 512 cope and would i need to upgrade my psu too?!?!?!

For future games your guess is as good as mine, but have a browse through some of the 9800GX2 reviews as they usually have th 8800GTS with the latest drivers in there benchmarks to compare it too. As for your PSU, if it handles the 8800GTS 320mb, it should handle the G92 version.

Your choice of screen is also going to have a big effect on performance, 22" screens are 1680x1050 res and although there 2"smaller they are still a very nice sized screen, they are also less demanding on you graphics hardware than 24", so you will likely get smoother framerates gamming at that res.

I'm gonna upgrade my screen soon and have settled on 22" as being the best compromise between size and performance

Sorry to hijack but I'm looking at a 24" upgrade.

I have a 8800 GTS 640mb. Will that cope with FPS games ok at a decent res?

thanks

Same here, I didn't feel that 2"s (+9%) justified a 70% increase is price
