I am currently looking to upgrade my Samsung 226bw 22inch monitor to either a 24 or 26 inch, its been a while ( 4 years circa) since i bought it and i'm just wondering whether a 1080 or a 1200 is better, and does anyone have any expert and backed up opinions on a suitable model.

Thanks in advance for your help

Stephen

EDIT, its for general gaming, browsing etc and maybe i will be adding a tv card also to remove the tv from my desk at the same time

What is your budget?

I prefer 1200 over 1080 for monitor display. This is a personal choice though and mainly because web pages are shown a bit fuller and windows itself in general is displayed better than @ 1080

It really does depend how much you want to spend but I had regrets after buying a 24" instead of a 27"
24" may well be large enough for you but 26" or 27" is a really nice size for a monitor that is for multi media use. (30" becomes too large sat at usual desk distance for me and too small text with 30" @ 2560x1600, 27" @ 2560x1440 seems to be the sweet spot.)
If your budget is sufficiant and you go for a 26/27 inch then you should also be looking at monitors with a res of 2560x1440 and not just up to 1200 (Dell, Hazro, HP all should be looked at for their 27" monitors.)
If you are looking at spending just a couple of hundred pound then go for a better quality 24" over a cheaper 26"/27"
My personal advice would be that if you really want a nice 27" monitor but are struggling to get a good 1 within budget look out for the Hazro 27" monitors that are due to be released soon and will be released in glossy and matte screens and going by the their great price/performance of their 30" model the 27" will be a good buy at a great price. (there is a Hazro thread here somewhere you might want to read) http://www.hazro.co.uk/
Money no object then just get a Dell UltraSharp U2711 27" now and be done with it. (which is unfortunately £130 overpriced on OcUK right now and can be picked up for less than £700 delivered now)

If my budget was around £200-250 I wouldn't even stretch to a 24" I would get a nice Dell ultrasharp 22" IPS panel instead.
You will need to decide if you want an IPS panel or TN and from that you will be able to decide which size you can afford.
On the other hand you may want to go for a 120Hz monitor with 3D vision if your main use is going to be gaming and video. Something like this maybe..

Maybe you would prefer a glossy screen for video and gaming in which case the Dells won't be any use but the up-coming Hazro 27" glossy might.

I would avoid buying a 27" size monitor that was only 1080 if you are going to be sat close to it.
(any 27" monitor that is 1080 is going to be relatively low budget anyway)

Ultimately there is a big difference in cost between a good 24" and a good 27"

Note: I know I referred to 27" monitors mostly when your thread was 24-26" but there aren't that many 26" monitors. Most are 27"

Edit:
I really should have mentioned that if you go down the larger screen and larger resolution route (2560x1440 or higher) you will have to keep in mind that you will need plenty of VRAM on your graphics card. (i.e one of the newer higher end ones) to run at a native resolution in the latest games smoothly. This is quite important and could make things very much more expensive for you. I can't say without knowing what graphics card you are running though. 1080/1200 gaming is very much easier on graphics cards these days. Worth keeping in mind and might help you decide on which screen size you need.

I hope you can pick through this post and gain some help from it. :)

^^ Great post

I too am looking to upgrade my 226BW but i'm only really looking to go for a decent 24" monitor and even though my PC is a gaming PC i'm not at this time interested in 3D or resolutions any higher than 1980x1200 so i'll follow this thread with interest

In fact if there was a 226BW clone that was 24" and around £200 ten i'd probably just go for that

Thats exactly the sort of post i was after.

Many many thanks and il start looking into the points you've made .

GTX570 OC btw

Just a few points, the dot/pixel pitch of 30" monitors running 2560x1600 (0.250mm) is larger than 27" running 2560x1440 (0.233mm), in other words, text is actually bigger. I've seen a few people complain about the text size on the U2711 and wished they'd gone for the U3011. You can of course adjust the DPI within the OS itself (if it has the option), Windows 7 is reasonably good at this, but some programs aren't compatible and it somewhat breaks the layout of them.

I presume you're talking about the Dell U2211H, it's an easy mistake, but it's actually 21.5" and also the pixel pitch on it (0.248mm) is pretty small since it's native resolution is 1920x1080. If you've got around £250 to spend, I'd say it's better to push for the 23" U2311H.

In fact if there was a 226BW clone that was 24" and around £200 ten i'd probably just go for that
There sort of is with the Samsung 2443BW or its successor, the 2443DW (main difference being the DisplayPort), they're only TN panels but have a native resolution of 1920x1200. Currently there are a few stores that have the 2443BW in stock for about £210. The newer DW variant seems to be much harder to find.

look at the real difference in size between a 16:10 screen and a 16:9 screen. quite a lot ! the 24" is almost the same as a 27" and would be the same as a 26"

...but then, look at the pixel pitch on the 24 @ 1200p vs the 27 @ 1080p ! much crisper image on the 24 and crisper means a clearer better resolved gaming world.

then also factor in price

yes there are lots of cheap 24 16:9 led`a and cheap 26-28" 16:9 1080p screens but they are really not that good.

lets be honest you spend £1000+ on a pc and upgrade every year or two, but then put a £200 23-24" screen with 1080p TN panel.

what you really want is the U2410 before 1200p is discontinued or go the whole hog and get the 27" 1440p screen resolution.

personally id push the boat out and get the exellent 24" 1200p dell with its superior panel as it has less input lag than the 27 and a really decent 6ms response time.

The only console that runs 1080P is the PS3 and i'm not even sure if that includes games, most console games dont even run at 720p and the next gen is a good 2/3 years off.

I'll look into the Samsungs thanks but whats the problem with TN, my current monitor is TN and its been great for games?

Just ordered the Dell U2410, Cant wait :)

Please update us on how you get on with it after it arrives.

I've been looking at getting the U2311H but after reading this I'm thinking the U2410 might be a better option, only the price is a problem.

The panel size of the U2311H 'vertically' is only slightly more than my current 19" (18" viewable) CRT.

So I'm thinking that 16:10 aspect over 16:9 has got to be better.

Sorry, looks like I somehow posted twice! Don't know how that happened.

How do I delete the second post? Do I use edit or contact a moderator?

I shouldn't worry about it, my android phone seems to double post on a regular basis, not sure if it's my os, bad signal or the forum but a mod can easily delete it if they want.

I will indeed

First impressions- whoa.

Colours seem such more crisp and defined and the image is " truer" if this makes sense, build wise its a doddle, it just clicks together and 3 leads and your away.

The touch sensitive buttons hidden into the frame ar a nice touch too and it has every conceivable connection at the rear.

Just needs more tweeking to get it perfect.

just had a quick blast on Need for speed also, no complaints there either and the FPS didnt drop much over my old 22inch

Thanks for updating us with your first impressions & glad you like it. :)

Good to see its alright with games.

after much soul searching I too have ordered a Dell U2410...it appears to be the best of all worlds...and I have managed to get a REV A05 so hopefully all issues will have been sorted.
just wish it will arrive tomorrow so I can have a play :)

Not to put a damper on things but the 'issues' you are probably referring to are related to the LG H-IPS panel which hasn't actually changed from the A02 revision. They may have tweaked a few things but don't think that the new revision eliminates the possibility of 'issues'. Having supplied many of these monitors of revision A02 and beyond I can say that in all likelyhood your U2410 will be just fine - and you'll love it. As mentioned on this thread and in our review it is a very fine gaming monitor indeed.
