£250 "gaming" PC

well he's only got a 19" tft... so 1440x900 is all we can have!

i'm still tempted to go with the am3/ddr3 new build, a cheap athlon ii which we will replace in a couple years (he's a newly qualified plumber, after a couple years he'll be rolling in it :p).

and then possibly go 2nd hand on a gfx card. hell, I might persuade him to take my 8800gt for £40, and look for a gtx260 for myself :p

Nah I wouldn't say that, mate. I have a slight pro-AMD bias, so I try to buy AMD when I can, but I was/am not 100% sure it would represent best bang-for buck in this scenario.

It it was for me I'd just go ahead and buy the AMD anyway... call me a fanboy :p But since it's not my money I was looking for some extra input.

If the weight of public opinion is towards a 2nd hand c2d over the athlon ii setup, I'll reconsider.

i had a not too dissimilar setup (sempron 2600+ @2.2ghz, 1.5gig ddr, 9600xt),
core spec wise, ive gone 75quid on foxconn a7das 3.0, 70quid 4 gig ocz platinum, 25quid sempron 140 @3.35ghz (dont judge me...), 55ish quid 550 ocz modxstream pro and 32quid b grade 7200.12 500gig.

i think the 600w version of the psu has dropped to roughly that price now as well :)

ran outta money, and using hd3300 as graphics.
i know a fair people will probably look at that setup and snigger, but there is a fair performance increase to keep me satisfied for the next couple of weeks till more money comes though...

not sure about what intel has to offer, been a bit of an AMD fanboy, but theres my two cents anyhoo
