Might be looking a quick cheap upgrade to my PC at work and was wondering if anyone could help? Got something like a AMD 2100+, ati 9800pro and 1gb ram there and it is starting to feel a bit slow. Instead of buying a whole new PC maybe give it a cheap boost!

Basically looking for a CPU, RAM, Mobo and Gfx card but don't really wanna spend too much as I won't be doing much gaming or intensive use there and have a high spec PC at home. Not that bothered if it is 2nd hand stuff either tbh.

Possibly something like Intel Core 2 processor, X1950pro, £40ish RAM, and £50ish mobo.

What would you guys recommended?

How's This?

Probably not the best :P

That looks ok. Gonna try and see if I can find a higher spec CPU 2nd hand as that is the only thing I would like a bit faster.

Mate just get the £15 Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 and that E2180 will hit 3-3.4ghz and compete with the X6800 chip in gaming situations. The DS3 motherboard that Pauliee spec'd is an overclockers dream so the 2 together with that Ram will make for one rapid budget machine :D

If you get an E2160 instead they are £45 and bring you back to near enough £50 inc. the cooler :D

As Slowrunner said above hehe.....must have hit post at the same time

Am trying to source a E6600 and maybe I can get that for around £70, just missed out on one in the members market! The extra overclocking ability and L2 cache would be good I reckon.

So far am trying for

E6600 - £70ish
Abit AB9 Pro - £58 (new)
ATi x1950 - £70ish (new)
2GB Ram - £50 (new)
CPU cooler - £15?

Makes it around £275 which is okish I think, will have a look around to see if I can find any stuff 2nd hand because I'm not that bothered tbh.

Just opened my work PC up and have a 420W PSU which is more than sufficient and have an IDE back up Hard drive as well as two IDE CD Roms so will need to get a IDE ---> SATA convertor, if they even exist that is :o Also got a Zip drive which will have to be put into retirement lol, proper old school computer I have here!

Yeah just putting approx figures in :)

Also might get the Abit IP35-E instead. The higher up models just have things like firewire, RAID etc which I have no use for anyway.

My dad managed to get 3.55 GHz out of that E2180 CPU, just need to put a little more voltage through it, he also changed the FSB and made it 9x instead of 10x.

So far I have got

E6600 - £81

MSI Neo2-FR + Geil Ultra DDR2 2.0GB + Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 - £124

Which makes it £205 so far.

Now I need to find a Graphics card, trying to hunt down a bargain of one of those lol.

One question about a PSU, will a 420W Chieftec be ok for this system? I might go for a HD3850 and the 12v line has 18A and I'm not sure if that is enough. I have seen a few people on other forums with 8800GT on the 420W chieftec so it might be ok I reckon. Probably will need to ask in the graphics forum for that though.
