Hi All,

I have just upgraded to 2500k with the following kit :

Item: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Item: G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V

Item: Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 Z68 Socket 1155 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

All is great apart from I am getting random freezes for approximately 30secs- 2mins.

Any ideas why this could be?

I agree with beejjacobs that when you change your motherboard you should always do a fresh install of your operating system (guessing that you are running windows ;) ) if you have done this try running 1 stick of ram at a time or make sure you have them installed into the correct slots, I.E Slot A & B (check your motherboard manual for the slots.)

This, RAM sticks should be installed in the same-coloured slots. Make sure you check your manual, it's different for different motherboards.

Hi sorry for a delay in replying.

It was a fresh install, Windows 7, got the freezes.

Then I tried Win 8 Developers dual booted with it and that was freezing.

Now I have taken everything off and put windows 7 on and no freezes (as yet). I'm quite puzzled.

Stick with it if it's working :)

Make sure you download the latest drivers from the mobos website and for any other components (GPU etc).

The ones supplied on the CD with the mobo/GPU will be out of date.

Well Definitely.

Its just I was hoping to shed some light on possible causes so I know what to do if it happens again.

I'm suprised that nobody has mentioned your power supply.

What is it, and how old ?

You mention random freezing for 30 seconds - 2 minutes, does the machine recover after the freeze or do you have to reboot ?

When it freezes, does the mouse pointer stop moving ?

Power supply is 700w OCZ Stealth approx 15 months old.

After freezing it recovers and everything is fine. The mouse still moves sometimes but other times i get the 'white over' (not sure of the proper phrase for that) then nothing moves until it recovers again

Start on the free solutions first fella, you definately want the latest drivers anyhow. Have you OC'd the i5K? If you have it could be the OC is unstable.

I'm not saying the PSU isn't to blame but you can only really test this theory by swapping it out for a known good PSU.....which is going to cost unless you can borrow one.

Not overclocked at all, waiting for new cooler before i do that.

PSU shouldn't be a problem I don't think.

Thats the thing, since my second install of windows 7 its not happening now. I'm just worried it will start again.

Download ultimatebootcd. It has a number of diagnostic tools to test the RAM,HDD and stresstest the CPU.

It's possible it was a driver issue which the re-install has resolved. To put your mind at rest i would test the RAM and HDD
