2500k vs 2600k in games

What would the perfomance increase be like from an AMD 965 BE to the I5 2500K? both at a 4ghz overclock?

cheers

At 4GHZ I'd reckon the i5 2500k would approx give a 20-25% gain.

If you're comparing your OC'd 965 then going off these benchmarks for a 980 http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Phenom_II_X4_980/9.html then it'd be on par with games that offer similar performance whether you go AMD or Intel.

But that's only on par with a stock 3.3ghz 2500k.

The CPU is a reasonable increase and performs much better at encoding for example, but for games with that graphics card I'm not convinced it will make a big difference, unless the games are relying on a lot of CPU calculations, not sure if that is the case in BFBC2 or not.

AshenShugar .... I thought I recognised the name.

I googled it and its from the Riftwar saga of books by Raymond E. Feist.

Great books. Loved the 3rd, A Darkness at Sethanon!

This is interesting.

You can see for instance that Dirt 3, scales with more cpu power.

It even seems to like 8 cores over 4.

However the weird bit is the 2600k loses to the I7 920

Article here.

What I have learnt tho in the last few years is to not to base to much of an opinion on benchmarks as my end user experience has tended to be different.

i'm not aware of many games that benefit from hyperthreading but the one game i do play quite a lot is football manager 2011 which is basically a spreadsheet like game without fancy graphics that would benefit i think from the 2600k's hyperthreading ability. for me that reason alone i would rather get the 2600k instead of the 2500k. other than that game the 2500k is the way to go

Cheers pal, might just stick with the 965 for a while then.. or at least untill the new Bulldozer CPU's come in :-)

I found these Metro 2033 benchmarks interesting.

It clearly shows the 2600k scoring the lowest minimum frames and the Phenom 2 6core the highest.

(I havent looked at the other benchmarks yet)

Oh dear, but then you look at these benchmarks the story is totally different.

I guess it comes down to the individual games, which architecture works better on which game and if the game scales better accross multi cores.

In other words its totaly inconclusive.

Ok, im sold on getting a 2500k over the 2600k.

BF3 in mind....

Quite surprised that you're buying a system now for a game that will probably be released in 4-6 months time, and for which the performance is very much an unknown quantity.

You might have upgraded again by then...

Dont worry, I have come to my senses.

I was getting the upgrade itch, as it was bonus time at work and I was looking forward to the Bulldozer unveiling.

Iv come to the conclusion:

1. Its summer time currently, that restricts my pc game time and the hot weather will have an effect on overclocking.

2. My current setup is indeed perfectly fine for now.

3. As you say BF3 (and skyrim) are not out untill Sep-Nov, so there is plenty of time to wait for Bulldozer and Ivy Bridge.

4. Lastly, if Im going to upgrade, I need it to feel like it wa worth it. Worth it for me, is truely next gen, and thats got to be 6 or 8 cores.

So for now Im going to hold tight. Hot weather plus not many taxing games out right now, so no need to upgrade, I was just investigating.

Had Bulldozer been released, then things may have been different.

The concern is appreciated.

What do you mean you've come to your senses ???

I believe that the correct conclusions are :-

1. It's summer - too hot to go out, so spend more time indoors and play games on the computer.
And perfect time to set up that water cooling loop(s) that you always promised yourself!

2. No it isn't.

3. Right time to buy new equipment is now as new games are out in September-November - Buying now will only just give you enough time to bed the new stuff in .

4. Any upgrade is ALWAYS worth it!
(to think otherwise is to admit that your better half may be right in the accusations (wholly unfounded) that you are wasting time /money on, spending more time with that than on something important and 'there is nothing wrong with what you've got - it works doesn't it?' - slippery slope beckoning here - come on hold yourself together )
If in doubt the OcUk forum can be accessed anytime - WE are here for you!

As someone who has a little experience of the upgrade itch - get the bugger scratched - you know you want to really.:D (if you don't that's an extra 3/5 months 'twitching':()

I also found those benchmarks very interesting and read the gaming benchmarks in particular. Just to verify and to make sure I'm not imaging it, if all I do on my computer is a bit of surfing, some word processing(light)and a lot of gaming then there is no point in my spending money upgrading from my current cpu, a Deneb 4 core Phenom 2, to say a six core Amd or even a SB I5 or I7 as those benchmarks show there is little difference between them and in fact the 4 core deneb performed very well. Is this correct and if so I'm probably better spending my money on better graphics.
