2560 x 1440 - How much VRAM?

Hi all,

I'm considering a nice shiny new Dell 27" LED backlit monitor which has a native resolution of: 2560 x 1440. Currently I own a EVGA 670GTX FTW edition (2GB RAM).

Is this going to be enough to play BF3 in ultra at an acceptable rate?

Thanks in advance.

Playable rate is subjective. What one finds playable, someone else will not. I would say it is bordering on the edge of that sentance.

Like Dave says, stick it in and try it :) Ohhh and plenty of VRAM at that res.

Yes, thought you may need to turn AA down to x2 or even turn it off.

Try it and see, should play it no problem. Have you overclocked your 60 at all?

Hey, thanks for replying. I've not overclocked the graphics card no, I've always had bad results with even small overclocks when it comes to graphics cards. Usually resulting in a seriously reduced life span on the card.

I'd rather not lay out £600 on a monitor if my system won't handle such a resolution. I would get an additional graphics card but I believe given the nature of SLI you will only get a max 2GB usable RAM (on the 670 like I have).

Cheers

I think it will be on the limits of 2gb, but should still play at decent framerates. As others have said, you would just have to knock MSAA to x2 instead of x4, assuming you wish to play BF3 at Ultra preset?

He will probably need to turn it off (AA) with a stock 670 but it should run ultra just fine. 2Gb will also be enough memory to run 1440p, thought you might want to disable desktop composition if its running close to the limit to avoid eating into the pagefile.

I happily play BF3 @ 5760*1080 "Full Ultra" with my 2GB cards but I do have Aero disabled to save a little VRAM.

That's good to know. Hmm, one to consider - only just bought the card so don't fancy replacing with a 4GB one.

Worth getting an additional one for SLI?

As far as VRAM useage goes, I rarely see it go above 1.5GB on my 1440p monitor in any game, but then I do have AA turned down on most games to boost performance. You'll be short on GPU grunt before you're short on VRAM though in virtually every case.

I'm trying to get a 1440p myself but missed the 40% off coupon christmas eve :-(

In answer to your question 2gb. Your 670 will do. My GTX570 however i'm told will struggle with games like BF3 etc. Think i've asked a good 200 people now and they all say the same. 2gb+

If your card is the 1.25GB version, make that 201 people :p

aa is not really needed at that res in opinion.

you should be okish for a while with a 670, but expect to go sli or xfire sooner than you planned ;-)

I have three off your cards and I've never had and ram limit on that res.

Personally you will want two cards at that res to max games.

With three bf3 runs about 100fps maxed
