i took a risk and got myself a phenom II FX5000 :D
100% stable on stock volts but not overclocked too much.

Still running mine @ x4 but never got it 100% stable when unlocked as it's a genuinely damaged core. I'd get "corrected hardware errors" in Windows event viewer and it would sometimes BSOD during boot but practically never during usage.

It's stable, pretty much indefinitely, in Prime95 (tested to about 10 hours) and games @ 3.3GHz with raised RAM voltage or 3.1GHz with RAM @ stock voltages. Would also take looped Prime95 and 3DMark06 for several hours.

For the most part I run it as a dual core, where it really is 100% stable, and enable ACC to take me to quad when I need the extra power.

Edit: For the overclock, you will need to raise CPU-NB speed as you raise CPU speed. If CPU-NB is too slow you will get errata, leading to problems. HT Link should ideally be the same as CPU-NB but it's sometimes worth dropping it a little in the search for stability.

Hey Phatzy . . . looks promising! :)

Can I request you publish any screenshots you have of the stability testing you did please? . . . It may seem like a pain but there will always be a of Doubting-Thomas who view a CPU-z screenshot as nothing more than a Kamikaze screenie and anything but "100% stable" . . . it's always goes down better if someone shows it's stable rather than just saying it's stable . . .

Every bit of effort you make to share your findings with the OcUK community will prove useful to anyone else who is thinking of trying their luck with an affordable unlock gamble!

FX-5000? Was that one of the original Phenoms then? Did'nt know the FX tag was still being used.

It's an Easter egg from AMD. The athlon x2 5000+ 45 nm version is an AM2+ deneb - essentially a Phenom II 920 or 940 with two cores locked and downclocked a lot.

tried to go 2.9ghz but prime fails soon as test starts, im pretty sure the 4 sticks of ram is affecting the stability. I've took a screenshot of the bios see where i can improve it.

I think overclocks are limited by motherboard and RAM on these CPUs. Without the 11* multiplier they could be expected to clock similarly to a PII 940.

Lovely, looks like you got a good deal there, tis always nice when you can get stuff like this to work like the interwebs said it 'might' :D

I bought an Phenom II 550BE when they first came out last year, ran it as a dual core for a while, then earlier this year I upgraded my home cinema machine and used a Gigabyte 785 based motherboard that could potentially unlock the other 2 cores, low and behold it did unlock and was/is stable at stock volts and now I have a £77 Quadcore 3.1GHz Phenom II :) ...it's rather OTT for what I actually use it for (media computer and file server) but I love paying for one thing and getting much more ...it might overclock, I really don't know, I haven't tried because of what I use it for and the fact it's on the stock cooler.
