Hi folks. I'm thinking that after xmas/in the new year upgrading to the SB-E platform from my 2600K. Simple question. Would I be wasting money? I use my system for gaming and web surfing and thats it.

Cheers
Ross

Why bother with SB-E? Wait for the server chips and jump in with a dual-procecssor system. Add a couple od HD7970, 96GB ram and a few SSD in RAID 10 and you're laughing :)

More seriously though - if you currently have a 2600K and all you do is play games and browse the interweb, then you already have more processing power than you currently use. No point increasing your procecssor power just to have more idle time (and cores/threads).

As others have suggested, there are better upgrade options for the same money.

SSD would increase load speeds
New gpu (depends what you already have)
Memory (again, depends what you have)

Check his sig! He doesn't need a new GPU!

Looking at your sig I don't think there's any CPU, RAM or GPU upgrades you can do which will make a difference. Have you got a SSD?

Thanks to the guys that gave me a serious response.

As to the others, no this is not a troll thread. I haven't been following the new architecture at all so for all I knew it could the thing that is all holy and it was the best thing I could do. In regards to the "Worst spare cash thread ever" comment, sorry that I work my backside off. I save my money, I don't drink, smoke or gamble. What's wrong with rewarding my self?

Some people need to think before they open their mouths...

But as I said, THANK YOU to those that gave a serious response to the question and thanks for the alternative suggestions.

seriously though mate, you have an outstanding pc there which is probably already massive overkill for what you do with it. If you'd like to treat yourself to something then maybe a bigger monitor or something?

What I'd do if I had your spec and wallet:

Silverstone TJ11
Full watercooling
Z86 mobo with waterblocks

Or use the money that setup would cost to buy a porsche 911? :D
