im looking at going from Asus VN279Q 27" (27" 1920x1080) to 29UM68-P 29" (29" 2560x1080).

im trying to google but i cant find any results matching my search. freesync and the higher resolution would be really nice to try.

what do you think?

ultrawide is good... but make sure you take careful note of the dimensions involved

i've got the 34" version of that LG currently and absolutely love it, the only reason i'd upgrade from it now would be to go to the 1440p version that got released last year

27" 1080p will be too low PPI for that screen size. Go for 1440p.

29" UW 1080 is a good PPI for the screen size, however vertically it's not very big at all, it's the same physical height as a 24"

Either go for 27" 1440p, or 34" UW 1440p.

I wouldn't go for 34" UW 1080p as that will be too low PPI.

ive got the asus 27" one. so sort of an upgrade. i find the pixel density fine.

i was worried it may not be as tall as the 27" asus i have.

I have a 27" 16:9, 1440p. Using 5% windows scaling. It is taller than a 29" Ultra Wide.

Do a google search for "monitor size comparison"

IMO go for a 1440p, I think you will regret PPI on 1080p 27" long term. I had a 1080p 24" 16:9 and noticed slightly more pixelly than 1200 24" 16:10.

ok so i will get the UW monitor. any reason why this one is more expensive? this one

i do already HAVE Asus VN279Q 27" (27" 1920x1080).

That is the cheaper of the 29" UW, LG have a curved on which is another £100. Also the curved one is 10 bit, the flat panel is 8 bit. For a large monitor I'd want curved, for 24 it's pointless, but 27" 16:9 and 29" UW and bigger go curved.

You want to keep ppi to 95 or more, lower and text will appear pixelly. Also in games too, at higher PPI you won't need AA.

i dont know why but im not interested in a curved screen.

so im guna get the £260 one. will have to wait a couple of weeks.

thanx for the tips guys.

For a smaller screen, sure. But over a certain size, I think it's worthwhile. Had a 24" flat, then 24" curved (that size curved is a bit daft) but with 27" curved it's worthwhile. The curved has 10 bit panel and is more accurate too. Although I do understand there is a fair difference in price.

29" UW is too short vertically as well, it feels VERY cramped. 24" 16:9 is same height as 29" UW

Also if you have a 27" already, you are dropping down in vertical size

this is exaclty why i created the thread. im not sure i could deal with the screen being shorter. gutted now lol guna have to save up some more cash :S

EDIT - woah, the price difference for next size up is nearly £200...

hmm that doesnt seem as much smaller as i though. maybe i can cope with it.

EDIT - it seems there are not many 32" uw monitors. havent found one yet lol

I think the 27" is a much better shape. The 29" just look way too short, height-wise. If you want gaming then I would definitely say the 27". It's easy to drive and perhaps even more immersive than the 29" simply because it looks bigger. If you want productivity then go for the ultra. But remember you can always use your old monitor to add real-estate for productivity.

its just for gaming. i do already have a couple of monitors but my gaming space is not big enough to fit multi monitors :(

damn i really had my hopes up for this. i guess by the time i save there will be more choice and better monitors maybe even a £260 34" freesync ultrawide monitor.

I think the choice between 27" and 29" is the most difficult to make. If it's just for gaming then no doubt in my mind I would get the 27". You don't really notice the large pixel size when you are gaming but the sheer size of a 27" is very important for immersion. The 1920x1080 format is also much easier to drive. Some games don't support 2560x1080 well. As a gaming monitor you would be much better aiming for a higher refresh rate than a higher resolution.
