2700K Mid Tower White/Black/Red ROG Build

I'll be doing a dummy build this week/weekend so I can decide if I should rebraid cables (from black braid to white braid). Will get some pics taken!

Anyone with any ideas on a 5 1/4" front bay fan controller, not many white options so guess I'm gonna be painting! Ideally want physical knobs than one of the touchscreens.

Apologies for the lack of updates everyone, I had a busy weekend and didn't get to my 'dummy' build!

Couple of extra parts came... Some MX-2 after reading reviews (was also on special) and also a Samsung EVO840 256GB so I'll have a working rig while I build/benchmark! Grabbed a couple of sweet 140mm Enermax fans from the MM, not sure on their positions yet and I'll have to change LED's from Blue to White in one of them! :)

Loving the look of this build so far! I know it's late but BitFenix have some really nice white cases out. I'm a huge fan of the Shinobi XL in white but it's a full tower

I do love the internals and designs of most of the bitfenix cases, but their logo looks huge (& tacky) and midi tower + white there's not a lot of choice! I was really after a case with a flat top (used for some storage) and space for a 240mm radiator in top! :)

Well I got a couple of hours (that turned into 4!) to put things together for build 1.

Very happy with the components I have and the mods I have planned afterwards.

Fairly happy with layout, the H60 you see in the pic is only temporary, as I think I'm going for the NZXT Kraken X60 or something similar to utilise the 2x140/120 space at the top...

My idea of getting an intake fan at the bottom doesn't look like it'll work as my idea to use the second mounting point for the HDD cage really removes any spare room at the bottom as the AX1200 is very long! Lots of braiding to do and still need to decide on a fan controller as I'll want full control of the fans (also don't want to push the power for them all through the board).

I know there's no graphics card... But that's still in my main rig as BF4 is only a few days away! ;)

Recommendations on fan controller? (I'm really after one with knobs and no display as I'm not a fan of the 'touch' types...)

I'll end up painting one (to white, leaving the knobs black) and not many are in stock...

CA-217-LL_28834_350.jpg

The Lian Li PT-FN04 looks like the likely candidate... Thinking the knobs staying black with the LED's would look good? Although very expensive to immediately void the warranty by spraying it!

BB-001-ZA_609_350.jpg

The Zalman ZM-MFC1 looks ok, but out of stock and I think would look quite plain painted white as it'd loose all the writing/dials etc (they all will anyway!).

BB-007-AK_38165_350.jpg

The Akasa FC. SIX would be the cheaper option, it'll look very plain sprayed white, but I think better than the Zalman?! Cheaper than the others so I'd have less worries voiding the warranty too!

The Silverstone Tundra TD02 looks good but I really need some benchmarks...

WC-002-SV_76126_350.jpg

It would look ace with the CPU block powdercoated/sprayed white! White tubing, white & black radiator & fans... Although I have fans already not many of the AIO's come without fans...

The Silverstone is priced a bit high as I'm still leaning towards the NZXT Kraken X60, as I know it's one of the better performers, looks good and colour fits into my build... Really like the idea of the white pipes on the TD02 though, might have to look at similar on the X60 ;)

YOUR BASKET
2 x BitFenix Alchemy 6pin PCI-E extension 45cm - White £6.49 (£12.98)
2 x BitFenix Alchemy SATA 6GB/s braided cable 30cm - White £5.99 (£11.98)
2 x BitFenix 3-Pin to 3x 3-Pin Adapter 60cm - sleeved white/white £5.95 (£11.90)
1 x BitFenix Alchemy Internal USB Extension 30cm - sleeved white/white £4.98
4 x BitFenix Alchemy 2pin I/O extension 30cm - White £3.95 (£15.80)
Total : £62.63 (includes shipping : £4.16).

Think I'll be doing my own braiding as pre-braided cables are so vastly overpriced (also not all I need are in stock)!
Next thing I'm looking at is backplates for the MSI 7950 OC BE... Choice of backplates seems limited to around 4-5, many are very overpriced for what they are... And none seem to come in white so I'll be spraying... Many have large 'EK' and such logos and I begrudge having logo's when I don't have their hardware! Although Watercool Heatkiller GPU Backplate 79X0 would look cool painted white... Not stupidly priced either!

My other thought is to make my own, as I've always intended to make a white 'shroud' for the PSU (although now it's fitted I'm not sure it needs one)? I could probably use the same material for both?!

Thanks guys!

Couple more pics, I'm waiting for braid to arrive so spent most of this weekend installing Windows 8 and setting things up (and blowing **** up in BF4 :D ;) )

Here is the new build compared to my old rig in the Lian Li PC75.

'Downsizing' worked, but really struggled to get things to look tidy in the Fractal, that'll hopefully change when I rebuild after braiding as I can spend more time on it!

size_front.jpg
Here we can see the fronts, very clean lines to both cases as that's my style ;)

size_side.jpg
Side by side you can see the reduction in size more drastically (excuse the cable chaos in the Lian Li!).

Received a package today.... Can you guess what it is?

mdpc_braid1.JPG

Yep my MDPC braid from Nils over at MDPC-X! I've heard so much about this stuff that I'm really looking forward to trying it out... I know! Looking forward to braiding?! I must be mad! (Ok, it's been a few years since I last braided anything!) ;)

I also ordered a couple of clips for securing cables (behind mobo tray etc) and some new fan headers & pins (should I break any & to replace existing beige fan headers)

Not quite sure what I'm going to do with the crazy coloured extra braid Nils has sent me! :o

Thinking more about my cooling and fan controller choice...

The Define R4 has literally no clearance behind the door for any controller knobs (unless they're recessed, pop in/out, flip down etc)

fancfrontdooropen-300x225.png

The Scythe Kaze Master Flat 4 Looks great, but I'd have to spray the front white... Also OcUK don't seem to stock Scythe for some reason?
Picked one of these up for just over £20 delivered elsewhere... Painting the front doesn't look like an option as it's an all one piece of Perspex...

Looking into how much load I'd be putting on each channel (and to determine how many channels I need) I'll first take a look at the fans I have, their power requirements and where best to use them.

Fans I have currently:
FG-015-BX_64363_350.jpg

3x 120mm Bitfenix Spectre PRO.
From BitFenix spec page:
Voltage (V): 5+
Current (A): 0.11
Speed (RPM): 1200
Max. airflow (CFM): 56.22
Max. pressure (mm H2O): 1.24
Noise (dBA): 18.9

These have great airflow but not ideal radiator fans...

2x 140mm Fractal Silent Series R2
From Fractal spec page:
Voltage (V): 6+
Current (A): none listed
Speed (RPM): 1000
Max. airflow (CFM): 66.0
Max. pressure (mm H2O): 0.84
Noise level (dBA): 18.5

Picked up a Zalman ZM-MFC1 in silver on the MM for a fiver, it's missing all cables but I've tracked down the power connector used and know the pin-out so will replace/directly solder to the contacts. I'll probably remove some of the sound dampening behind the door to accommodate the knobs... Which I'll probably shorten and not have the silver covers on (so they're smaller)... It's not like I'll need to adjust them frequently! ;)

BB-001-ZA_609_350.jpg

Also grabbed the NZXT Kraken X60 after Gibbo kindly dropped the price by a few quid... The 2x140mm layout should fit the top of my R4 better than 2x120mm. Fingers crossed my calculations/research are correct! (They were a bit 'off' - see below!)

PSU should be winging it's way towards me too... Also ordered another 140mm Enermax Everest! So the next couple of weeks will see me changing things with some progress shots! And to finish my sleeving! ;)

Well I finally had enough time to go about a few changes...

Mainly a White PSU (I picked up on the MM) and the Kraken X60... As anyone knows a 'few' changes like this only take a 'few hours' ;)

So to start with, this was the current build with H60 and AX1200:

kraken_1_pre-upgrade.JPG

kraken_2_internal_foul.jpg

I hit a 'few' clearance problems with fitting the X60 as intended into the roof... Clearance (I'd calculated) from the motherboard was fine (1-2mm gap next to ram slots!)... Rear case/USB ports were not...

kraken_3_fan_through_roof.jpg

So that lead me to mounting the radiator internally with the fans mounted on top in a 'pull' config... So anyone experiencing this will find a 'problem' with getting fan power cables into the case... I removed them from headers and threaded through a hole, then reattaching the headers... Worked well!

kraken_4_washers.jpg

Next problem was routing the fan cables, would've been nice to bend some rad fins and thread them through the rad, but I didn't want to trash my new rad already! So I mounted some washers on it to give clearance to thread cables over the front...

kraken_5_fitted.jpg

And it fits! Quite impressed by my handywork! ;)

kraken_6_exterior_fans.jpg

Exterior fans are not as ugly as I first thought! Need to get some nice 140mm fan guards now though (as all I hard are lots of silver 80mm and some 120mm)...

kraken_7_PSU_pcie_cable_problem.jpg

I came across a problem with the PCI-E power cable I had with the PSU and I was one short already (as running CF with these MSI OC BE's/TFIII requires 3x6pin and 1x8pin)... I need to track down some compatible modular cables as the ones with my Corsair AX1200 are not compatible...

kraken_8_finished.jpg

'Finished' build! At least until I get some more PSU cables and do some braiding... Roll on Christmas and I'll get some time to properly finish it! ;)

kraken_testing1.jpg

A 'burn in' test of the Kraken... VERY impressed is an understatement! That's using another 120mm intake (at the bottom) and on 'Silent' mode! With my 2700K back up to 4.6... ;)

The Corsair AX1200, has lots of modular cables. The PC Power & Cooling 600W, has very few modular cables. Simple to swap Corsair modular cable to PC P & C, no. :(

The basic 'modular' ends are the same (8 pin) but on the Corsair a couple of the 'sloped' edge connections are 'square' on the PC P & C, 2 of them are even 'bridged' together (with plastic).

I've gotta repair one of the modular PCI-E cables dodgy connection, through my troubleshooting I found a short on one of the cables, when isolating which it was - the cable came out from the plug! :o

kraken_7_PSU_pcie_cable_problem.jpg

I looked at getting some from PC Power's webshop... $9 each (not bad), $32.50 international shipping (ouch!) = $50.70 for 2 cables... No thanks!

Best solution I think is me sourcing some of the modular ends used and fitting to the AX1200 cable (the one I have has 6 of these anyway - more than enough!)... (As I'm sleeving cables its not a huge headache).

The PCI-E power cable ends are easy to source, but how do I identify which particular end (model number?) the modular end is - so I order the right one!...
