2700k on 2011 socket

Hi guys,
i was just wondering wether an i7 2700k would work on an Asus Rampage IV Extreme x79 motherboard.
I know its the 2011 socket but ive never had an intel board, ive always had AMD so i dont know anything about intel at all.
Any help would be great thanks.

Nope. The 2700K can only fit in LGA 1155 boards. This means Z77/Z68 boards (other chipsets too but these are the ones to go for).

Thanks, what do you think the maximum overclock is for a 3820 or a 3930k?

Can't find a thread for the 3930k at the moment. Though the do range from 4.5ghz - 5ghz and not uncommon 5ghz +

Should be able to get near 5ghz on both. What is the system for? Might be better to drop back to an i7-3770K. Gaming wise there's no performance difference between the lot anyway.

The system is going to be purely for gaming, with 3 or 4 gtx680 graphics cards and a watercooling loop, so i was looking to get as high as possible overclock as i can for gaming.

Christ. Overkill would be an understatement.

The only need for that kind of horsepower would be to go triple 3D screen.

There is not a lot of difference between all 3 (3820/3930k/3770k).

That setup sounds insane. What res are you planning for this? 680 quad SLI is massive.

What games is it for?

I can show you some benchmarks, to show there is not a huge amount between GTX 680 SLI (2 cards) and GTX 680 Quad SLI.
