290 or 970?

80c? What were they testing with, furmark? I've never seen 80c in a game on the older 780 which uses more power and runs hotter. Even since going sli my top card hasn't went over 79c and my pair are non ref which aren't great for sli.

Not really no. The 290 will kick out IMO a noticeable amount more heat to your room over time but that can either be a blessing or a curse depending on your situation :).

Good.

Now if power consumption is not really an issue (and for me heat output is not an issue) how about framerates. Are the 290 and 970 in the same ballpark?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: the 290 (if you get a great clocker) is probably a slightly faster card overall but really it's a couple of FPS here and there. If your 290 is average then it will probably be a couple of FPS here and there slower than a 970. It's really marginal either way. Basically you can't lose.

As above: look at the unique features AMD and nVidia offer and see if any really interest you.

Yeah but the running temperature of two entirely different cards with different coolers is a pointless comparison. Compare the temperature of your room after gaming for a couple of hours on both.

There's only one winner.

My Radeon made me go from shivering to sweating in a couple of hours :D.

My room isn't the biggest and I have never once felt that am too hot from them both running tbh.

Tbh Nope, isn't it something the max heat out put vs how well it runs?

So is a 75c 290 vs 970 @80c or 77c not the same amount heat output? Just the 970 needs less power to run?

It doesn't run cooler, it just uses less power. I have seen reviews of the 970 hitting 80c much hotter than my 290.

lmao if we're using temps we've seen on other cards to compare I've seen 290's hitting 100c in some peoples rigs.

970s hit nowhere near 80c for the majority of people, mine doesn't even break 70c in BF4 after a couple of hours. Usually around 64c and that's with 1500mhz on the core. Also a lot more quiet than most people 290's will be.

I think I mixed up the max temp the gpu will go too :(

But OK then I have seen them hit 70s witch is where my two sit between

And I bet them 290s was reference design.

OK here is another scenario. What if I play at 1080P 60Hz and run games with VSYNC. Will both cards be identical?

Both cards will be identical no matter, you wouldn't tell them apart just on the bases playing a game.

The thing that sets them apart is the extra features, so like Physx vs no phsyx or mantle vs no mantle etc

You have 275W of heat generated by a 290, as opposed to 145W of heat on the 970. 130 extra watts of heat are being generated by the 290. That is why the 970 runs cooler and in turn quieter. If you see a review with the 970 hitting 80c, it either had a very low fan speed or it was a faulty cooler of some description.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing that review where the 970 hit 80c. It would be an interesting read. Link me please.

I don't believe many games make use of either of those features do they? Is Physx not mostly done on the CPU?

Think you missed my post above. I was looking at max temp 80c the gpu will allow.
The temp range from high 60s to high 70s just like my two.
Hell I run bf4 on ultra unlocked frame rate and get no higher the 77c on both cards.

Glad I could help you learn something :o
