My brother has a Allendale at 2.8/2gig ram & has enough dosh for 1 of the above cards, but which 1 is more future proofed like for crysis etc.

The 2900 only has 512mb ram but he only plays at 1360x768.

For 1360*768 get a 8800GTS 320MB or if your worried about memory get the 640MB version although you don't really need it for that resolution, we don't really know which is more future proof yet and anyone claiming either way is just a fanboy.

Yeah I agree 320mb should be ok for 1360 but he's just made up his mind for a 2900 as he's got 8 pin connectors or something.

thx all

I had the exact same decision to make between a 640MB 8800GTS or a 512MB HD 2900XT

It seems that they're about on par with the 2900XT being slightly faster in occasion so I went for the 2900XT. It turned up yesterday (no free Call of Juarez game with it though :( ) and I'm very happy with it - gave the Bioshock demo a try too and it looks seriously impressive

Just got home with it as only live up road from OCUK (phew) & it came with Call of Juarez separately in a paper cd wallet.

It sais on the box it needs a 750w PSU  , he's just turned it on now with a 620w so we'll see how it goes.

I might just send them a webnote then!

What make did you get? I got a Sapphire card and it said a 550W. I'm running it on my Antec NeoHE 550W PSU without any issues even under heavy load (Bioshock, 3D Mark) on an FX62 system with a Raptor hard drive and two further hard drives

They might just say 750W to account for cheaper PSUs

Yes the 750 wattage rating is for crappy PSUs. If they said 500 Watts, which it really only needs from a quality brand like Corsair. Then someone runs it of a no name 500 wattage PSU and it blows guess whos going to be liable for it, Yes ATI.

He got the HIS model.

Got 10k in 3dmk06 which is good I think.

Had to get Bioshock hotfix drivers to get all textures.

He's not impressed with Bioshock performance as its 30fps most of the time with vsync on at 1360x768. Vsync off its a nice playable 40+ fps.

I noticed the fan spins up a lot in 3D & its quite loud, for those after a quiet rig!

My thoughts precisely, which is why I did this:

:D

Well he went one better than that, he took it frickin back, what a piece of fecal matter!

Only ran it for 20 minutes & it ran like a dog, even though 3dmk06 scored well.

Very loud, very hot & would not clock at all even with an 8pin power connector.

Did exchange + £70 for an 8800gtx, sorry ati fanboys -we tried...

I'd never bother with v-sync unless you're getting fps consistently over your monitors refresh rate. Other then that it's just a fps killer.

Max settings with that res and 40+ fps isn't that bad. Is that in DX10 or does he not have Vista?

Haven't been able to download the demo this week mainly due to not being home for long enough at one time. Gonna pop into town and pick up the game early friday and spend all day playing it :)

Tell him to OC his CPU a bit more. I was getting 12600 in 3DM06 with my spec in sig.

I was getting high 80's at full settings and that resolution on my X1900XT  . No hotfix and on 7.2's.

Good move, he will be much happier with the GTX. :D
