Hi,

Was waiting for the 390x to be released but looks like thats not happening soon so do you guys think i should sell my 7970 now while it's still worth something and get 290x or just continue the wait.

I would be upgrading the 290x to whatever is best at the time 390x comes out.

My budget is 250+ whatever i fetch for my 7970. I just don't want to buy a 980 or something that high end if it's just going to be made reduntant in a few months.

Thanks

If you can be patient then that could be the best thing with new cards around the corner. Not all of us can resist just getting the best card they can afford "now". Your current card is not too shabby either so it's not like you can't still play games. Looks like the 390X in June and NVIDIA will probably release a GM200 card to counter it in the £500-650 range.

Come to think about it that's why the Titan X is kind of warping the value of high end GPUs. AMD can release the 390X at £500+ and it would still look a bargain compared too the £800+ TX. We all hear the same thing from people saying it's not meant for gaming, but NVIDIA sure as hell market it at gamers and enthusiasts. I would try and save up £450 for the 390X if possible.

How long is it likely to be before the mid-range cards appear? I understand the companies release the high end ones first, but is it about 6 months after before the lower range ones appear?

With Kepler the Titan was in February then 780 in May so it should really be less than 6 months. Especially with AMD releasing their high end card in June at a probable sane price point, it will prompt NVIDIA to release a mainstream high end card like the 780 was.

I got a 290X yesterday and it copes very well with recent games at 1440P full detail. At £250, I feel I have got a right bargain, so get it, flog the 7970 and see what is what in June. 3 months is a long time in the PC world :)

I would wait. That's what I'm doing. In the past I haven't and then I've regreted it! The 7970 should have you covered for a while yet?

It's official, Gregs account has been hacked!!!!!!!!!! :p

If a 980 is made redundant in a few months wouldn't a 290X be too?

I should have explained. I figure those really expensive ones will lose a lot more of their value when there is better competition.

Anyway thanks for the input guys. So just to throw something into the mix what about second hand 7970 to go crossfire?

I sold the 7970 and got a second hand 290. Didn't cost much more tbh. Still think I did the right thing as the 290 will still be worth a bit

Neither the 980 nor the 290x are going to be made redundant this year, I'd just get a 290x and when the 390x launches get a second one.

7970 crossfire is also a decent option. I'm using crossfire 290xs. There seems to be a lot of discontent with crossfire support right now (see AMD driver thread) but I personally have been pleased by it.

I think for games which do support crossfire average scaling is in the 70-80% region, which is a tidy bump.
