In XP with ATi cards I used to use ATi tools to overclock when a 3D application was launched, and underclock when I was in Windows to save heat/power.

In Vista with my 8800, I've been trying to get Rivatuner to perform a similar function, without much success.
nTune will let me launch a profile when an exe is launched. But I wouldn't mind something to do it automatically when a 3D application is launched. Basically how I used ATi Tray tools.

Does anyone know of anything else that I can use?

Cheers

Try to re-enable classic nvidia panel.
Install nvtweak/coolbits.
And there you can select diff clocks for 2d and 3d...

Unsure though if it's possible in vista though, sorry if it isnt :( .

Is there a limit on how much I could/should underclock the card for 2D?

At the moment I have it @ 400/700 core/mem. How low should I go, bearing in mind for 3D it'll be clocked <650/900?

Think these guys are talking about lowering the clocks in 2d to save power/heat, and then clocking up when they need to use 3d.

Lower the sliders as low as they will go :)

If it's any help,
I spent a bit of time on this a while back, but only in XP, I got Rivertuner auto switching 2D/3D but it would not work comming out of stand by !
Ati tool worked fine and I think it should work in vista

forgot, also it had a greater clock range...but I seem to recall You can set the 2D clocks to low, use a bit of trial and error ;)
