2GB to 4GB system not showing upgrade

Windows 32bit is limited to 4GB for the entire system memory. This includes memory on the graphics card etc.

So, say you have a GFX card with 1GB of memory, that allows only 3GB max to be used of system RAM.

Not strictly true, you can run a 4870X2 with 4GB on a 32bit OS and still have around 3.25GB free. This has been soon in similar threads, still don't quite understand it though :p

True, tell me about it lol, Microsoft's own explanation doesn't even make sense lol, also boils down to your motherboard. There are so many factors involved it's hard to make a clear explanation.

Still, 32bit is on it's last legs, 64bit is the way forward :)

Hi guys,

Just to finish this post I upgraded to win7 64bit

System now shows I have 4+GB of memory..... very happy :)

Many thanks for advice

Motherboard/driver support is still another part of the puzzle in achieving 4gb+ support.

My old Asus A8R-MVP for instance works perfectly fine with 4gb in WinXp 64 - no issues - no special settings, but Vista64 and Win7 64 only show 2815mb usable memory (and I have to forcable set 4096 maxmemory in msconfig (vista/win7) boot options else blue screen )

xp 64 bit inst too good id get win 7 64 instead

What exactly is wrong with XP64-bit? The truth is that it runs like a bunny with it's tail on fire on new hardware. It may not look as pretty as Win7 but with a single SSD it boots in seconds and it feels very much more responsive in general use. It doesn't have any of that click three times to run anything either (2 of those clicks to confiorm that you really do want to run the program you clicked on because anything that isn't by Microsoft must be more dangerous than going for a walk in Helmand).

W7 is a breath of fresh air isn't it!

Hi guys (orig poster here), I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree.
I put win7 64bit on Saturday just gone & by Monday night lost all internet connection & still have been unable to get it back.

My ISP (Sky) has told me to go back to xp or vista as these are the only ones they support.

Surely that can't be the case, a massive new OS & an ISP doesn't support it.

I've raised this concern here:

If anyone has some answers... PLEASE

Your ISP (sky) are talking through there backside. It does not matter what operating system you have it should work. Just one question though did you install the drivers for your motherboards chipset, graphics and sound and if you did were these drivers Vista/windows 7 64 bit drivers?
