Hi everyone,

I have not built a desktop for a while. I have been using a Legion 5 Pro laptop for the past few years, but I am looking to get back into a desktop build.

The purpose of this build is a lounge gaming machine, with a secondary use as a media system. I will be hooking it up to an LG G4 OLED TV, so 4K gaming is the goal. I am working within a limited budget, so I am trying to make a 5070 Ti fit. I know AMD GPUs often offer better value, but I am set on Nvidia for this build.

The 2k limit isn't a hard limit, but I'd like to stay under this if I can - with Xmas round the corner.

Here is my basket so far:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,993.79 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Let me know if I have made any mistakes or if there are any changes you would recommend.

Thanks!

Is it your intention to mix white and black components ?
Yeah :D Going for a Black and White build. Hoping it will look better than it sounds. Most of the internal components are white - however the GPU and RAM are black as I can't find affordable options in white. The PSU is Black and White.
I think the GPU may look like the odd one out as the RAM sticks are slim with RGB so the black sides wont be noticeable.
Keep looking at 5080 GPU's for a true 4K build, but not sure I can accommodate the additional cost without bringing the price down elsewhere.

Ive just built a 7800x3d, 32gb ram, 2TB m.2, 9070XT 850w rig for my son and the total cost was £1460. 2 grand for that is crazy money. Id be wanting a 5080 and a 9800 x3d for that. You can shop around for best deals.

Thanks for the comments. I didn’t see mickeyflinns comment til after I just placed an order for the following :

G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo EXPO RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C30 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit£329.99
Asus GeForce RTX 5080 Prime OC 16GB GDDR7 PCI-Express Graphics Card£999.95

I’ve been watching the price of ram creep up over that last couple of days so wanted to get that locked in tonight. While I was at it I splurged on a 5080 :) so just the rest of build to sort now, trying to keep it as close to budget as possible.

Im correct in thinking the 9800x3d isn’t worth it over the 7800x3d when playing at 4K?
I figured the money was better spent on the GPU.

Since I posted it looks like the Kingston has jumped from £300 to £350 and the G.Skill I purchased for £330 is now £350. Never seen RAM prices so volatile. Looks like they’ve doubled in a week.

Hopefully everything plays nice together. Thanks

Wow thats very expensive for the spec. Good luck with the build.

I get that people like aesthetics, but if I was spending in the mid 2k (2.3-2.6 range) for a gaming PC I'd pony up for a 5090 while reducing costs elsewhere, even if the end result looked less pretty.

We all have different tastes/needs, half the fun of the hobby!

Thanks for the feedback.

I don’t think there’s much scope to bring the overall cost down. I decided to step up from a 5070 Ti to a 5080 since I’ll be gaming at 4K, and the performance difference felt worthwhile. Similarly, I went with the 7800X3D over the 9800X3D because at 4K the gap is minimal compared to lower resolutions like 1440p.

£1K for a 5080 seems to be the going rate right now. There are slightly cheaper boards, but I’d rather stick with Asus – most 5080s are priced higher anyway.

I kept the PSU at 850W to save a bit, as 1000W isn’t really necessary. For storage, it made sense to spend a little extra on a 2TB SSD, especially with prices likely to rise.

I could have shaved ~£30 by dropping the motherboard from an 850 to a 650, but the upgrade felt worth it. The RAM ended up costing more than I wanted, but prices are volatile and I had to buy quickly – it’s already jumped £70+ since I placed the order.

The only area I think I could have saved was on the AIO and intake fans, but that wouldn’t have freed up enough to justify stretching to a 5090.

Parts should arrive over the next week, so there’s still time to swap something out if an alternate spec makes a meaningful difference. Any suggestions before I unbox?
