£2k to spend, what is necessary

Meh the Swift ROG is glorified TN panel IMO get a decent 27"IPS 1440p screen for around 400 and enjoy the games as they were meant to be seen!

Even though he has the budget I wouldn't bother with x99, for gamers z97 is were it's at x99 doesn't offer any tangible benefits for what you want other then improved synthetic benchmark scores.

But if you're spending 2k, you'd be silly not to go x99.

But if you're spending 2k, you'd be silly not to go x99.

I dont see why, only reasons to go X99 are specific applications aka video editing etc.
For gaming with up a dual sli setup there will be no real gain, definitely not worth the cash.
And of course the 2nd reason to go X99, because its cool to have the fastest :)

If you can get a full build for £2k that's x99, why would you then choose the older 4th generation cpu's and z97 boards? Makes no sense.

Because you get more for your money? Look at that bundle deal for 540 gbp postd above to get a x99 going with the chepaest of everything and matching psu it will cost 700 gbp which means cutting back elsewhere to be in budget. Potentially that could mean going from an sli setup to non sli setup which will significantly reduce his performance.

What sort of x99 build did you have in mind anyway?

Just a quick build, i know it's £13 over but that's nothing.

OP says he has mouse, monitor etc.

Firstly, just wanted to thank everyone who has responded. I am now definitely going to build my own and can't wait to get cracking. I'm now looking at components and it looks like £2k will be fairly comfortable - any money left in the budget will go towards a g sync monitor.

This is the first build that I have created and any feedback on this would be really appreciated. I'm new to this so may have missed something vital but here we go:

You won't need a 1000W psu for GTX 970 SLI. I would swap the Corsair RM for the EVGA Supernova G2 as it is a better psu. If you want some headroom go with the 850W, although the 750W would also be fine.

Also the Crucial MX100 is a great value SSD.

X99 vs 2nd 980, your going to get far more performance per$ with a 2nd card

EDIT: Re-reading your post, I read it wrong another 980 over going X99 makes more sense yes, the below was comparing X99 and Z97.

This isn't completely true, Z97 can handle SLI/Tri-SLI perfectly fine.
The performance difference isn't worth the cost it would be for X99, you'll squeeze a little more performance out but it won't be by a lot.

For gaming you're going to see no beneficial differences going for X99 over Z97, regardless of budget, it's pointless at the moment.

When the technology is less niche and cheaper then it will be a viable option over the 1150 socket.

I know it's along time but would it be beneficial for us to wait a year to see how bad console ports are going to be?

I'm looking at getting some parts after Xmas.

Isnt it advisable to get a bigger PSU for upgrade ability and for the coil whine thing people are moaning about?

Look at Watch_Dogs, The Evil Within and Dead Rising 3, you don't need to wait the bad ports are already here. A 750W would be ample for SLI 970's using that as a figure point of what power you'll need.
