Just picked up a 160GB Seagate 7200.10 but it has a 2MB cache  Want to use it as main HD replacing the current Hitachi 160GB which has 8MB cache (but not perpendicular). Would that be advisable?

Will also run some test with HD Tune.

TIA :)

The Seagate will give a better synthetic benchmark result in HDTune (unless the Hitachi is a T7K160) but the real world performance is likely to be a lot closer since that relies on the cache and more importantly the caching algorithms used to fill the cache more than the raw speed of the drive. Hitachi have traditionally had very good cache performance so the transfer rate advantage of the Seagate may not yield a huge performance increase.

The Hitachi is indeed a Deskstar 7K160.

This is what I got from HD Tune...

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10

Hitachi Deskstar 7K160

Think will stick with above for now & use the Seagate to store music & backups :)

Was going to say that there isn't a great deal of real life performance difference anyway :)
