hi there,

I'm looking for a second hand laptop to replace my girlfriends laptop, which is slowly dying.

Its use would only be for word processing, playing music/films and internet. As long as it could handle those tasks at relative speed it would be cool.

As i said that i would buy it for her (as she's broke), i dont want to spend a fortune. Which is where my second hand idea comes in.

Oh and please dont think i'm being tight with my money! i would love to buy her a sexy new laptop but i dont have too many pounds in the bank either!

So, any suggestions for a good reliable 2nd hand model?

I think 15" is fine, memory can be upgraded by myself. Gfx are not important. Wifi is. CPU needs to be reasonable.

I know nothing of laptops, which is why i am asking for suggestions.

I think £200 is the max i could afford. But below that mark would be MUCH better. :)

Thank you good people if OCUK. I hope you can help.

Gil.

The problem with buying second hand at the moment for me is that prices are falling for new stuff and the second hand market does not seem to have followed to the same extent.

For example the spec below can be had for a shade under £300

Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T5670 (1.8 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 1 - English
2048MB (2x1024) 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel
IntelJ Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
160GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software
Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 (802.11 a/b/g) MiniPCI Card
1 Meter Power Cord (3 Wire) - UK

I see laptops for sale second hand all the time with inferior spec at higher prices.

I know this does not help but you may not get the most for your cash buying second hand.

Just a suggestion, that may fulfill all your requirements, although definitely not be capable of anything more...

A second hand Toshiba Portege or similar might fit the bill for you. It'd be quite sexy (they don't come much slimmer), very portable, and have your networking needs. The only downside I can see is if the films is something you need to be portable, since the DVD drives are in the docking stations. If you've read that and are still interested though, you could do worse than see what's available for your sort of budget.

As Hyster said though, if there's any way that you can scrape together a bit more cash, you'll get a whole lot more PC for your money!

i'm using a dell latitude d600 at the moment - granted i've chucked a quicker cpu, a bit more memory, faster hdd and higher resolution screen on it since i've had it...but performance was acceptable before i did that. i actually use it as my 'main machine', just rdp'ing to my desktop for beefier tasks. it comes everywhere with me because it's nice and light. i think you can pick up refurbed units from a certain auction site for around your budget, maybe even under - and this will include a licensed copy of the o/s too. whilst not shiny and new and a fair whack down spec wise, a £100 difference in price is quite a lot when you only need a *really* basic machine...i dont buy into this whole you need a dual core cpu just to be able to type a letter and listen to music at the same time malarky. granted, i have a dual core machine, but it is running a vmware environment - that needs it!

thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'll check them out.

If anyone else has any further suggestions i would be happy to hear them.

Thanks again,

Gil.

Purchased a refurbed HP NC6000 off the bay a couple of months ago. It does all you have listed and came in under your budget. The battery needed replacing but it wasn't guaranteed to be long lasting.

I only use my laptop as a form of mobility to supplement my existing desktop and TBH, I'm happy with my purchase.
