What you guys think are these still viable machines?

Im looking at the Apple Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.26 (2009/Nehalem)

im looking around auction site they seem to be going for around £1000

Im just into video encoding , itunes stuff, some wow and FM2013.

id probably at some point put a updated GF in it.

If you need to have Mac, then (i'm pretty sure) some of the Macbook Pro's can now out perform the machine, but they're a bit more than the £1000 mark, but they'll be a lot quicker for general tasks and are portable.

A GRAND?!?! Christ!!!

Seriously don't, 4 year old processor tech just isn't worth it at all, especially for a grand!!! Get almost any modern new mac for a grand and it'll out perform it. Hell my mini was £600 odd new (he discount pov quad core) and will be faster everywhere except not having a dedicated gfx card. Plays FM13 like a champ though ;)

Anyway a grand on a new(er) mac, get imac, air/retina or mini, all hold their value well or can be easily upgraded with the much needed ssd's...

So don't touch the mac pro.

My 2008 Dual Processor Mac Pro still does just fine for the work I throw at it.

While people may suggest buying a new machine that is not a Mac Pro, I'd keep in mind that a Mac Pro can do a lot of things that other Macs can't. Like for example 3 drives in RAID for video work. You would need quite a few peripherals to match that with an iMac or Mini.

The Mini may be newer, but I think a Mac Pro will still have the edge on it. They are... Or at least were, workhorse machines built to last.

The old Mac Pro's are pretty solid. We had a dual CPU version, 12cores, 24threads, 32GB RAM. Went like **** off a shovel! Add to that an SSD boot drive in the spare optibay, and 4x RAIDed drives, was a hell of a lot faster than anything I've used before.
