Hi there,

I have a laptop in which the SATA hdd can be seen in BIOS and during Windows and not at other times.

After checking the SATA connectors on both the mobo and HDD they appear fine.

Is it on its way out and is dying / dead?

Just wanted a 2nd opinion

Thanks for your advice in advance

What do you mean?

Check eventvwr for hard drive errors in the 'system' tab
Download the hdd manufacturers diagnostic tools iso and burn to cd using imgburn, boot from this cd and run the testing tools

Sounds wierd, sure it's not the security settings stopping it from being viewed? What are you trying to view it from?

The hdd is not detected on bootup most of the times and every now and then it is....so the laptop works when it is detected and doesnt when its not

So I wondered if buying a new hdd will solve it

I cannot even do a HDD diagnostic because of the hdd intermittently being found

So...what do you guys recommend / think?

I thought maybe the hdd is dying / dead..

ahh true bledd I can remove it and attach it a desktop or whatever to see if its detected...

hmmm

will give that ago,

If its not detected it means its either the connector from the mobo or the drive itself

which one would you put your money on?

thanks

Drive

Personally, I've never had a laptop connector fail. Not saying it can't happen.

Could also burn Parted Magic iso to a CD, burn that and boot from it. You can do a few hard drive tests in that

Just experienced exactly this problem with a laptop last week. Would find the drive sometimes, but not always. Done a drive scan on it in DOS and there were bad sectors everywhere.

Replaced the drive, and all was good.

I always keep 4 or 5 spare laptop hard drives. Same goes for laptop ram, can quickly diagnose issues when you've got spares about the place

thanks for your replies

I took the HDD out and connected it to a working desktop

The machine would not even get past POST, it just hung on the screen where it shows the BIOS...

I think its safe to say the HDD needs replacing am satisifed as at least I tried..

Thanks for all your help appreciate the time taken to respond

Cheers
