hi all
i am rebuilding my stepsons pc just put in a better cpu and ram

the motherboard is from a gateway its (Intel (Schroeder Town) G33 Motherboard)

http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Intel2/4006194R/4006194Rnv.shtml

his graphics card is Nvidia msi 9800GX2

now there is a 2 pin connecter on the gpu which i beleive you plug into the MB to sllow the sound to flow through the HDMI output on the graphics card

at the moment i have picture but no sound (occasionally i get just noise)

my question is where on the G33 montherboard do i plug the 2 pin connector into???

You need to find the S/PDIF header on the motherboard (if it has one).

Intel G33 is the chipset and doesn't narrow it down much.

I can't see much from the image in the link (which you should remove as they're a competitor to OcUK, or perhaps not. Do they sell in the UK?).

Can you download CPU-Z and have a look at the motherboard tab to see if it gives you the exact model?

i think i found the header on the mb connected it up the wire caught fire and melted. (not sure how old the wire was or why it caught fire!) i quickly powered off from the mains.. just ordered a new cable!!

was def in the spdif on the mb pc rebooted ok since.. (obviously no sound still)

all i can see from looking or spec of original pc is that mb is

4006194R - Intel (Schroeder Town) G33 Motherboard

the other thing wit hthe audio there were 2 plug i think one was "hd audio" and the other "ac97" ?? from memory look like i should only use one but which one??

HD Audio and ac97 is analogue. SPDIF is a digital connection. They are not interchangeable.

The SPDIF 2 pin on the GPU is an INPUT header to accept sound FROM the PC and pass-through to the HDMI device with speakers. If the motherboard does not have an SPDIF output header or a soundcard is not being used with the same then you cannot pass anything through.

This might help you:

Link was helpful however on my mb I found where it says "spdif out" however I just have 3pins in a straight line. And only 2 connecters therefore which 2 pins should I use? pin 1(left) and 2 (centre) or pins 2 & 3 (centre & right) no where on the support website does it say which pin is ground/power/spdif

Also on the gpu the 2 pin plug seems to fit both ways and i dont want to connect pins wrong way around, so which wire should be on the left (pin1) and right (pin2) the wires are black & red

spdif out on my MB

HI all couple of quick questions..

i want to connect the 2 pin cable that goes between the SPDIF out on my MB into my GPU so i can output video and sound via the HDMI from the GPU.

however on the MB i have 3 pins in straight line ( the pins arnt labelled so i dont know which is power/ ground/ spdif signal)

i know on most motherboards they are either 4 or 5 pins but this is just 3pin.

also on the GPU which pin is ground and spdif signal? as the plug seems to fit in the gpu both ways (not sure if some plastic inside is broken allowing the plug to fit both ways) but obviously dont want to connect it the wrong way around.

FYI this is my MB

Are you sure the motherboard has an internal SPDIF connector? I can't see it mentioned in the list of connectors on the board. It does mention SPDIF on the rear connection panel.

What graphics card do you have? Some don't require SPDIF connection, as they have their own sound controllers.

yeah the MB has a SPDIF out on the rear and also on the board is has SPDIF-OUT printed in white letters on the green circuit board which 3 pins in a row.
i have taken a pic but have nowhere to host it online to be able to post on here

i just need to know which pins are what..

uploaded a pic. i put an arrow next to the 3pins you maybe able to just make out the text "spdif-out" written on the bottom of the MB

I see. Surprised that wasn't mentioned in the specs. As for what pin is what, I'm afraid that is anyone's guess without something to indicate which is which. Does it not mention this in the manual? Assuming you have one.

I guess most motherboards have a standard connector for SPDIF, you will either have to remove the wires from any cable you get, and swap them around, or get a cable that where the wires have individual connectors.

I'm pretty sure no damage can be caused if you get the wires wrong.

the 2pin plug that connects to be MB is actually split into 2 individual so i could connect in any pin combination.. however i believe that its either going to be pins1+2 or pins 2+3

im sure spdif out is pin2 its just knowing if pin 1 or 3 is either power or ground.
i think if i connect to power by mistake it will fry the wire..and could cause damage.

im really shocked that the pins arnt marked on the mobo or anywhere online..

What about Intel? Gateway are just a vendor, Intel made the board. It has a model number and name. Maybe they would be of more help. If they can't help, then I don't know what you can do.

If you can get definite conformation from someone that mixing up the cables will not result in catastrophe, then hit and hope, so to speak, is the only way.

Without the relevant info, you can't know which is which. If Intel can't tell you, then only someone else with the same board probably can. That's going to be a very long shot, I feel.
