I didn't know that, I was under the impression the space was "lost to the file system". I assumed Windows used the space to store info on the drive.

Amazed this hasn't been sorted out years ago, especially now we're seeing 4TB drives. Nearly 200GB is a huge difference really, for those of us that know about it just accept it, those who don't know are kind of fooled into less space than they think.

On a 4TB that's 400GB you essentially 'lose'. Why can't they just use the same figures?

Technically the HDD/SSD manufacturers are correct when they refer to TB and GB.

It's Windows that's technically incorrect as they should be referring to TiB and GiB.

I prefer the base-2 notation personally (1024 = 2^10 = 1K). But then I'm a geek.

No like Surveyor said, you do have 4x 2TB drives and windows is reporting 1.7 TiB and wrongly calling it TB. Its Microsoft that is doing it wrong.
