However in the short to medium term, before a new motherboard is purchased, i want to use it in a PC that only has SATA connections, is this ok to use?

thanks.. was thinking Sata would be simpler to move and re-use elswhere if required.. plus can plug it into USB with a simple sata to usb thing I already have..

Don't think you can put a NVME drive in the IcyBox, pretty sure it is for M.2 SATA drives only.

Correct. From the specs listed:
- Base: B key
- M.2 card size: 22x 30/42/60/80
- M.2 connector: SATA III (AHCI)
- Supported M.2 cards: M.2 SATA B key/ B+M key

NVMe won't fit as the adapter doesn't have M key so a good safety feature.
