(2x2) vs (4x1)

Ok look, the people with a Q6600 if you want to overclock it to 3.6GHz or below then go for the 2X 2GB Memory Kits (6400 rated).

If you want to run your Quad higher than 3.6GHz you will either have to get the 2x 2GB Mushkin kits 6400 (vastly expensive) or go for 2X 2GB Memory (8500 rated). You could also go for 4x 1GB Memory like the Crucial Ballistix 5300 kit, though i would only recomend them if you have one of the newer P35 Chipset boards since the memory controller will handle 4X 1GB Memory modules with little problems, unlike the older chipset boards.

Don't I need RAM rated at 1066MHz (8500 rated) for the Q6600? Or are you saying that 6400 rated will overclock OK?

Nope the Q6600 has a stock FSB of 266 so essentially you really only need 4200 rated memory (533MHZ).
533MHz in dual-channel = 1066MHz?

FSB of the Q6600 is effectively 1066MHz (quad transfer per 266MHz BCLK), You'd only need 1066MHz (PC8500) rated memory in single channel?

So confusing! :)

Hi R0cky,
Good question. That is my aim too since I want to run Linux Virtual Machines under Vista and need 8Gig too. I also do not want memnory that can't be overclocked so that 4G OCZ kit looks mighty interesting.

I need to check what motherboards support it though.....
