Is TRIM support in Raid a firmware problem or a raid controller problem? I was thinking of getting 2x80GB Intel G2's to raid them, but obviously there is no TRIM support for raid setups with SSD's right now (right?).

I wanna make sure because I'm not willing to upgrade my mobo just for the TRIM support if its to do with the Raid controller rather than the firmware on the drives.

Cheers

Correct.

It's the RAID controller drivers that need to be updated to pass the TRIM command from the OS to the drive. This assumes you've updated your drives to the latest TRIM supporting firmware (2HA or 2HD).

Thanks ChileanLlama, so what you're saying is, Theres no need for hardware upgrade for Raid to support TRIM? There's no mobo to support this atm right?

Yes. I would expect Intel to support the ICHxR as quickly as anyone will with new drivers. But there's no other motherboards or RAID controller cards (AFAIK) that you can buy that currently support TRIM.

So until there is it's either RAID0 and no TRIM or single drives with TRIM. I wouldn't be put off by that though. I run 2 machines with SSDs in RAID0 and the only time I've noticed any degradation is when I've done stupid stuff deliberately :D I don't think the absence of TRIM will be that noticeable.

Also, if you image your drive you can break the RAID, set your drives to IDE, run HDDErase in DOS then recreate your RAID and restore the image. This shouldn't take longer than a couple of hours, and I doubt you'd need to run it more than every 3 months or so if you noticed degradation was bad.
