ok i have 2 HD connected via IDE and 2 drives a cd and dvd on the other cable. how then do i install a 3rd hard drive?thanks

yup

2 per channel, normally 2 channels per motherboad.

You can however add an ide card, SATA card or SCSI card (if you are feeling flush), the chances are if your motherboard/system is reasonably newish it will have additional IDE or SATA connections to the standard 2 IDE channels.

you could use an external firewire HD box but you would be limiting the drives peformance to the firewire speed of 400, usb2 would be a little faster but not a lot in it to be honest. if its just storage and not required for speed then i would opt for a USB2 external hardrive unit. they come in many sizes one will surely suit your buget.

of course your PC needs to have USB2 or firewire to use either choice.
