Looking to start taking up walking and other outdoor activities soon and been looking at the 3 in 1 jackets like the The North Face Men's Evolution Triclimate 3-in-1 Jacket but are they really that good?

I mean looking at them online the look to be a fleece jacket inside a waterproof jacket?

So if I have some micro fleaces would it be better spending the money on a waterproof (or gor tex) jacket?

I've got the North Face Amplitude Triclimate, its the same as the Evolution but the insulation is synthetic instead of fleece.

I've found it to be an excellent jacket. Its been up Snowdon with me in cold weather and kept me warm. I wore it to the football matches in the depths of winter last year where I was sat still for two hours in minus temperatures and it kept me nice and warm.

I got mine in the sale so it wasn't ridiculously expensive, however my missus does tell me it makes me look like a massive scally as all the kids round here love TNF jackets.

If you've got some decent fleeces then a good waterproof jacket would probably do you though! :)

Generally, the proper North Face kit is quite good I've found. I probably wouldn't get a 3-in-1 though, I'd go for separates and layers. Base layer t-shirt, long sleeve base layer or merino wool thermal, fleece and a featherlight smock and there won't be much out there that will make you get cold.

What I've found is keeping the cold off your legs is an amazing way of keeping warm. Either (running or hiking) tights or thermal longs under a pair of thin textile windproof trousers will stop you needing much on top. Then if it's really really cold you add wind-stopper gloves, a buff and a beanie hat. You'll be toastie :p

Hahaha, I used to have a ski jacket like that :D

I have one of those camping jackets from cots world cost me about £140 last year. When this one gets old i am going to buy another one. They always getting more advanced, new material and other features. My jacket is from jackwolfskin, it has a fleece and waterproof outer shell but you can't wear the fleece. I would not realy wear a fleece anyway. but i do wear the outer shell in early winter and late winter. realy just a more advanced version of those cheap water proofs that i used to wear when i was young.

i always found other jackets useless, they might look trendy or make me look like i am from a girls magazine but they jsut don't keep me dry or warm. I tried all types of jackets, the only ones that did the job were these camping jackets. they are realy snow boarding jackets, i still have an animal snowboarding jacket but it is too big for me as it was the last one on the shelf when i bought it.

What you mean by a camping jacket?

I bought a Jack Wolfskin 3-in-1 last year, yes, it was expensive, but it is so warm, and perfect. I already have a berghaus fleece for when I just want the fleece, but this jacket keeps me perfectly warm and dry. Its everything proof, and have yet to be anything but warm with it on! Works great in a field at 1am with a telescope in winter . . . .

I can't speak about the particular North Face jacket but my most recent jacket is a 3 in 1 job although I'll probably never use it like that. I got it primarily because the outer jacket had the features I required in terms of waterproofing, breathability and powder skirts as well as looking fairly muted so I could wear it other than just snowboarding - I'm looking on the fleece I got with it as a bit of a bonus, I'll only wear it occasionally but it's decent enough quality for a thin fleece.

In theory you're better getting quality separates but sometimes the price means it makes sense to get them all together even if you rarely use it as it was intended.
