Hi, hoping you can help, i'm moving into a new house for uni next week and would like some internet, but because BT (and every other ISP because apparently they use rebranded BT engineers) are busy until mid October, we won't have our super fast fibre optic broadband for a month.

Iv'e been wanting to get one of these 'personal hotspots' for a few years now, but due to me only needing it <30 times a year, iv'e seen it as uneconomical.
Now this chance has come, i'm getting one :D

My question to you kind people is, which one do I choose?
3 seems to have awesome 3G coverage now, so much so that i'm considering moving from giffgaff/O2 to '3'
Also, I would like to go PAYG because of me not using it much, contract would be silly.
I would also like it to be cheap (I am a student after all ;) )

the offer i'm looking at from 3 is PAYG £60 3GB inc which is valid for 3 months and this comes with the device too.

Cheers!

O2, Vodafone and Orange all have better coverage than 3.
The 'gotcha' is that 3 exclusively use the 2100mhz spectrum, meaning better data rates as long as you have signal. Signals are strongest around population centres.
It depends how often you go outside of towns and cities on your travels.

How much data will you realistically need? Where will you be travelling to / from most frequently?
GiffGaff PAYG do 20MB of data for 20p a day and 'top up' bags for £5, £7.50 and £12.50.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll mostly be using it at my Uni house for the month without internet and will use 5-10 GB maybe less if its not very fast, and will be mainly in Oxford which i know has pretty good 3G coverage. Mostly travel on trains to and from uni, so i Know the connection won't be great all the time but there should be a good enough connection to do web searching most of the time i hope.

I did consider giffgaff, but I'd have to buy an O2 device wouldn't I? and that is £70

You can pick up additional 3GB prepaid SIM cards for about £12 (reduced from £20) from one of the big Internet retailers too.

Since moving from Vodagroan to 3 I've had no issues and consistently better reception than I had with Vodagroan. I can also compare it directly to Vodagroan as my GF is with them still. This included going to 'the country' such as remote areas in South Wales. I would never switch back.

Ditto. O2 being at the very bottom.

I'm very happy with 3 MyFi, used it all over the country and even worked fine on camping trips in rural Norfolk and Cornwall.

I decided to go for the cheap option in the end, I'm using an old '3' dongle on their 3g network with a PAYG plan.

It's cheap with 3GB pre loaded when a friend gave it to me, so it's basically free!

The speeds are nothing to shout about, only enough to buffer online videos in the early hours of the morning, loading websites during the day are quite slow but overall it better than I expected :)

Oh and because it's old, the drivers on the dongle itself don't work, I had to download them from 3's website as none were available on Huawei's own site ( forward planning ;) )

Cheers for peoples advice, but I went for the cheapest option for obvious reasons.
