3 Series Compact

e36 Compact:

316i - 105bhp (avoid)
318Ti - 140bhp
318tds - 90bhp (avoid if you actually find one)

323Ti - 170bhp only available in Europe (all LHD)
316g - Germany only, dual fuel (petrol and natural gas!). Only a handful sold.

e46 compact:

316Ti 105bhp
318Ti 115bhp
325Ti 192bhp
318td (not available in the UK)
320td 150bhp

E46 Compacts are superb cars. Just be a bit ugly, but then again if you want a 3 Series hatch.....

Just been to Sainsburys - parked there was an Imola Red E46 Compact with the BMW Areokit and some tidy BMW wheels on it. I have to say it really looked rather handsome and as a well built alternative to a Focus...

It's a bloody horrible looking car but I'd drive one if it was cheap or I really, really needed a small hatchback and RWD.

You say small, but the e36 compact is only like 6 inches shorter than the e36 saloon. Had my mates e36 352ti parked up next to my 325i, and the wheelbase was the same!

That is very cheap and I suppose I can see the point in a used one.

Not my cup of tea but can see how its a decent car. 325 must be interesting! That one that Fox pointed at looked nice, its the front end I really despise though.
