Working shifts is really a killer. I'm not even working particularity strenuous jobs and I'm young but I still feel it some weeks. end up working nearly all my weekends every weekend then normally day shifts during the week = only 1 day off. weekends turn into 9-6 then 7- early hours of the morning usually 4ish then back 9-6 then 7 4ish again finishing with another 9-6 for the end of my weekend. It's probably really not healthy for my body but need to earn my keep around here.
I do two weeks of days and two weeks of nights currently, and the only time I struggle is the first day of the new rotation really. On days I do 0700-1530 (though at the moment it's 1645 due to compulsory up time) Mon - Thurs, and then 0700-1200 Friday. On nights I do 2045-0630 Mon - Thurs. When I first started the nights I was knocking back energy drinks all the time, but now I've gotten used to it I'm not touching it. I've found the best way is just eat healthily and just drink water, stops any of the nasty side effects I experienced initially.
Yeah I've noticed if i can squeeze a proper meal in on my days where all i have is an hour layover between jobs i feel much better, as well as some fruit for snacks. But thats hard to do a lot of the time sadly.
Personally im worth more than the pittance of pay rise the unions have got. What about all those jobs worth that got a rise for basically just turning up for work?

I used to work at Royal Mail on nightshifts before they brought in zero hour contracts, Jesus Christ that was a slog. Would often be 6pm-6am or 10pm-6am which might not have sounded long, but in that environment, oh Lord.

As others have said, moving off of shifts was the best thing I ever did for my general well-being. We are not meant to be awake all night. The problem is, you don't how much better you feel until you actually stop shift working! Move jobs if you can!
I work the fun 2 12hr days followed by 2 12 he nights, then 4 days off for a block of 7 then 18 day's of. I can never sleep long enough on the changeover day so end up buggered on the first night shift. Can't wait to get off shift's it makes me feel like crap and the amount of walking around I do on a shift as you get pulled from pillar to postis ridiculous
This kind of shift work is suicide inducing. Messes with your body clock and you always feel a bit off. Did the standard 2-10, 6-2 and nights for one of the main supermarkets many years ago. Wouldn't recommend it.
