How is Raid 1 pointless? It's Mirroring.. basically having a duplicate copy of your data at all times, When 1 drive dies you wont lose everything. External harddrives are not that safe, it's just a single drive and if it goes you're stuffed, unless it is something like a Synology/NAS type storage device and that has mirrored drives in it.
