Heya guys, look im building my 1st comp an need some spec advice. ive already ordered the x6800 but aint got a clue on what to buy nxt. alls i need is a stack so can any of yous spec me up....plz

Do you have a monitor or is that in with the budget. Do you want 20" -24"

ATI or Nvidia

SLI or Crossfire or 7950

£3000 is a decent budget for a high end specification, why dont you try to come up with something and see if others here can improve on it.

TBH £3000 for a PC is overkill, if you want to blow £3000 I would spend max £1800 for a PC, and spend the rest on large display and/or decent audio system. ie £1000 of a 2 channel audio system (£500 amplifier, £500 speakers)

Spend £1500 tops.

In 12 months time it will be outdated and you will still have £1500 in your pocket.

Cheers,

Mark

Depends really as unlike a majority of people, don't tend yo upgrade to the latest every 12 months.

Similar with me, i'll only upgrade when/if my computer starts to suffer running new programmes which require that much processing power etc.

Then again £3000 is a little overkill but as long as its fast yet future proof i don't see a problem spending that much.. and IMO if i was him, i wouldn't upgrade for at least 3-4years depending on the spec.

Scrap the last two items (the GX2 is overkill for a 20" screen) and go for the 24" Dell instead and get a decent 5/6/7.1 surround amp and some proper speakers (even if you get mini ones they will sound a lot better than any creative or other brand PC speakers)

Reackon he should buy an ATI since he's getting a crossfire board, 2 20" screens would give more space and yeah that external hard drive is not needed but don't we wish we all could afford one ?

With this much cash to spend, buy a single large screen and a really nice speaker setup. A few extra fps here and there will be forgotten when you have awesome surround sound and an amazing cinematic experience with a large widescreen monitor.

That's a cool spec, you know that motherboard in the spec, on the intel website it says " Four Serial ATA interfaces with RAID support (four additional interfaces available with optional discrete RAID controller)"

What is the optional discrete raid controller?

All specs given look good - i'd think about replacing the HDDs specced with the new Seagate 7200.10's (perpendicular recording). Their performance for price is superb.

Agreed, the one thing you will carry with you to future rigs will be your monitor and sound system, so cat the best while you can afford it

I can't believe the Overclockers have become frugal.

If you want a 24" Display you are going to then be down to around the £2300, then a decent set of speakers will be £2050.

If you then buy the Conroe x6800 your down to £1300. Then...

Motherboard, Top end G Card, 2GB DDR2 Ram,

PSU, Decent Case. SoundCard, Cooling, you would just about have enough to buy yoursefl a packet of spearmint polo's.

£3000 is by no means excessive if you include a decent Monitor and Speaker set up. I think that is what he requires.

- Better Gskill ram used by one of the guys at xtremesystems to get his world record with his core2.

- Saving of ~£30 with a cheaper 1900XT which will be just as fast as the ASUS.

- A single 24" dell monitor will be perfect for the crossfire setup, and better than x2 20" screens. Or you could go for a 30" dell 3007, but that will take you over budget to ~£3200.

- Finally the logitech G7 mouse is the best mouse out there, and the saitek gamers keyboard is excellent.

- No need for a raptor as it's a waste of money. Plus if you want more storage forget the external HD and just get another of the internal seagate 320gigs.

That all comes to around ~£2500 for a killer system or a few hundred over £3K with the 30" dell monitor. I would rather get the 24" monitor, scrap the creative speakers and with the ~£700 spare get a decent hi-fi/av setup to get a much better audio eperience. Go and post in the Hi-fi section and the guys there could help you out in choosing a stunning 5.1 setup.

:D

Spend loads of money on your mouse/keyboard/case and accesories/speakers etc etc.
But one buy a single core amd4000+ and say a 1800xt 256mb, that should tie you over for DX10 then as soon as DX10 is out, splash the rest of your cash.
Or get a powerfull conroe now if you can and skint on the graphics and buy a x1800xt256mb as they are cheap and perform great.
